The high school football season kicked off Friday with Week 1 action around the state.
Here’s a quick look at some of the best games, top stars and memorable performances.

CLASS 6A
Central Catholic 35, Jesuit 6
The reigning OSAA Class 6A champion Rams took a 21-0 halftime lead and closed things out from there against the visiting Crusaders of Southwest Portland at Hillsboro Stadium.
Luke Johnson, succeeding four-year starter and all-state honoree Cade Knighton, threw for three touchdowns in the second quarter, two to junior Jordan King.
Jesuit closed within 21-6 in the third quarter and launched a drive from its 32 that pierced Central Catholic’s 10-yard line. On Jesuit’s fourth-and-goal play, Central Catholic batted down a pass in the end zone to maintain some breathing room. That was among three times Central Catholic held on defense inside its 10 in the second half.
The Rams of Southeast Portland expanded their lead when Stryder Todd-Fields caught a short scoring pass with 8:37 left in the fourth quarter.
Myles Broadus completed Central Catholic’s scoring when he intercepted a pass and returned it nearly the length of the field — exhibiting some sideline tip-toe gracefulness — with 32 seconds left.
Michael Rincon led Jesuit with 162 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries.
Xavier Simpson was on the receiving end of the last of the four touchdown passes Johnson threw. Freshman Cru Newman played the final two series at quarterback for the Rams.
Central Catholic defeated Jesuit in the rivalry between Portland’s most prominent private-school football programs for the first time since 2017. It was the Rams’ biggest margin of victory over the Crusaders in more than 15 years (the teams did not play in 2008 and 2009).
West Linn 37, Tualatin 6 (full story, photos)
Gavin Haines ran for more than 150 yards and four touchdowns and Blake DeBisschop passed for two touchdowns to power the Lions to the victory over the Timberwolves in Tualatin.
West Linn held Tualatin scoreless until near the end of the game.
The win was West Linn’s seventh in a row in the series. In each of the past three seasons, Tualatin entered the matchup with West Linn undefeated, having started the season with a perfect record: 6-0 in 2019 and 2018 and 3-0 in 2017.
Lakeridge 35, Oregon City 20 (full story, photos)
Two interceptions by Jake Reichle, including one he returned for a touchdown, highlighted the host Pacers’ victory over the Pioneers in Lake Oswego.
It was Lakeridge’s third consecutive win over the Pioneers.
Oregon City took a 7-0 lead (on James Carter’s two-yard run) and made the score 14-14 (on Trey Martin’s 29-yard pass to Jahleel Heath) before the Pacers scored late in the first half for a 21-14 advantage. Reichle’s score on an interception made it 28-14.
Andrew Oliver rushed for 141 yards and two touchdowns, and quarterback Ryan Oliver completed 22 of 31 passes for 220 yards and two scores.
Mountainside 49, Beaverton 7
Six players scored touchdowns for the Mavericks in the victory over the host Beavers in a matchup of Beaverton schools.
EJ Broussard (80 yards rushing), Ty Adewumi, Bowen Stinson and quarterback Brian Mannion ran for touchdowns.
Mannion passed for 210 yards, with two touchdowns to Andrew Simpson (10 receptions, 124 yards) and one to Justin Hughes.
The win was Mountainside’s first in three meetings with the Beavers; the team began varsity competition in 2018.
Dating to Week 7 of Mountainside’s first season, the Mavericks have won 12 of their past 16 games.

Aloha 27, Westview 21
Logan Moore scored the go-ahead touchdown on a one-yard run with 3:10 left to lift the Warriors past the host Wildcats of Northwest Portland, who got two long touchdowns from Drew Bennett.
Aloha led 14-0 on Darion Stevens’ 17-yard interception-return score and the first of Zak Hurley’s two touchdowns. Bennett returned an interception 59 yards for a touchdown to make it 14-7 after the first quarter.
Westview pulled within 21-13 late in the third quarter on Braydon Libby’s touchdown pass to Xander Millard, and Bennett’s second score and a two-point conversion pass made it 21-21 with 8:33 left.
Libby completed 17 of 34 passes for 227 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Bennett had five catches for 155 yards, and Gabe Foster and Millard had four catches apiece.
The win was Aloha’s third in a row over Westview, which last season suffered its largest margin of defeat (48 points) in a 61-13 loss at Aloha.
Westview had won its previous four season openers.
Newberg 14, Sherwood 9
The host Tigers took a 14-0 lead on Owen Hawley’s touchdown, and Newberg held on after the Bowmen returned the kickoff for a touchdown to notch the victory.
Sherwood’s touchdown came on Cody Hall’s return of Newberg’s kickoff. Sherwood’s offense was scoreless, with Newberg’s defense twice making stands in the red zone.
Hawley had 52 yards receiving. Price Pothier rushed for 116 yards for the Tigers.
Newberg’s Conner Croskrey had nine tackles, a strip fumble and a sack, and Dylan Stroup had nine tackles and a strip fumble.
Newberg ended a six-game losing streak to Sherwood. The Tigers lost each of those games by at least 14 points.
Century 28, McMinnville 13
The Jaguars of Hillsboro defeated the host Grizzlies in a renewal of a series that had been dormant since a 2013 meeting.
Century won its season opener for the first time since a 2-0 start in 2015.
McMinnville had won its past four season openers.
In the teams’ past five meetings (dating to 2010), Century holds a 3-2 advantage.
Glencoe 42, Liberty 22
Sophomore Cam Stortro connected with Tyler Cox on three passing touchdowns to pace the host Crimson Tide over the Falcons in a matchup of Hillsboro schools at Hare Field.
Glencoe’s Royce Fasel rushed for 160 yards and two touchdowns.
Liberty quarterback Hiro Diamond passed for 175 yards and rushed for 86. Ethan Jones had seven catches for 89 yards and a touchdown for Liberty, which turned the ball over four times.

Sunset 40, Sandy 0
The Apollos forced five turnovers — including a fumble recovery on the opening kickoff — in the victory over the Pioneers in Sandy.
In his first substantial varsity action at quarterback, Kyle Jaekel (10 of 22, 167 yards) passed for five touchdowns, two to Nick Molitor (who had one of the team’s four interceptions).
Caleb Kim had 146 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries, part of a running game that gobbled up 262 yards. It was Kim’s fourth 100-yard performance in his past eight games (dating to 2018); he also had a 99-yard game in that stretch.
Sandy’s Montrell Jackson had six carries for 45 yards, Joey Wagner had two catches for 38 yards, and Tanner Brewster was 8-of-19 passing.
Friday’s game marked the third season in a row the teams have met; the Apollos of Northwest Portland have won all three.
North Medford 27, Grants Pass 20
Colby Neron’s third touchdown pass, a 21-yard connection with Bryce Dyer with 21 seconds left, lifted the visiting Black Tornado over the Cavemen.
Grants Pass took a 20-19 lead with 8:18 left on Jayden Brown’s 12-yard touchdown run.
In addition to his go-ahead touchdown catch, Dyer returned an interception for a touchdown to make the score 7-7 in the first quarter.
Neron finished 10 of 14 for 153 yards with the three touchdowns against no interceptions. Neron started two games at quarterback as a sophomore and was the varsity backup his junior season.
Chance Costanzo caught two of Neron’s touchdown passes. Devin Bradd carried 24 times for 123 yards.
Grants Pass’ Brown finished with 91 yards on 16 carries. Jett Hood (three carries, 74 yards) scored on a 67-yard run.

CLASS 6A vs. CLASS 5A
McNary 19, West Albany 14
Junior cornerback Sage Allen won the battle for a 50-50 ball with four seconds left to preserve the win for the host Celtics of Keizer.
McNary scored with four minutes left on Jack McCarty’s seven-yard touchdown pass to Braiden Copeland.
Celtics junior Dakota Dunagan had 26 rushes for 107 yards and a touchdown.
McNary senior linebacker Dyami Rios had three unassisted tackles, two assists, a sack and a fumble recovery.
Crater 9, South Medford 6
Blake Eaton kicked a 28-yard field goal late in the first half for the go-ahead points in the Comets’ victory over the host Panthers at Spiegelberg Stadium.
Eaton, in his first start as a varsity quarterback for the Central Point school, passed to Dawson Douglas for a touchdown that made it 6-6 in a game played in a continuous downpour.
Garrett Henderson’s 13-yard run provided South Medford with its points. He finished with 88 yards on 12 carries.
Sprague 21, Lebanon 20
Playing under modified rules (no kicking game, running clock in the second half), the Olympians of Salem won at Lebanon.
A touchdown pass from Logan Smith to Carson VanKempen gave Sprague a nine-point lead late in the game, enough of a cushion to withstand Lebanon’s final push: Cole Weber’s scoring pass to Brayden Currey for a touchdown and for a two-point conversion.
Dallas 26, South Salem 7
Junior Logan Person contributed mightily in all three phases of the game, leading the visiting Dragons to the victory over the Saxons.
Person ran for a touchdown and caught a pass for another. He kicked two field goals and broke up two passes.
Southridge 35, Forest Grove 0
One season after allowing an average of 51 points, the Skyhawks of Beaverton posted a shutout in their season opener.
Kaleb Moxley (two), Robert Marquez and Cypress Albright rushed for touchdowns for Southridge against the host Vikings.
With the score 14-0, Southridge recovered a Forest Grove fumble with three seconds remaining in the first half. JC Klee sat in the pocket and, just before being sacked, found Justin Lee in the far end of the end zone for a 21-0 halftime lead.
Forest Grove’s Shane Parrow had two sacks and three tackles for loss.

CLASS 5A
Wilsonville 34, Scappoose 15
Friday’s season opener matched two of Class 5A’s most prolific offenses, but you wouldn’t have known it from the halftime score: 6-2, in favor of Wilsonville.
Things picked up offensively after intermission, with Chase Hix finishing with four touchdown passes in the Wildcats’ victory in Wilsonville.
“We had to shake off some first-half rust,” Wilsonville coach Adam Guenther said in a text message.
Logan Johnson caught two touchdown passes from Luke McNabb, and Colin Stoddard (interception) and Trey Dieringer (blocked punt for a safety) made key plays for Scappoose on defense.
Deacon Smith and D’Angelo Macedo-Becker led Scappoose’s running game.
Wilsonville’s Justin Slothower had two touchdown catches, and Payton Dart and Josh McKenzie had one apiece. Joey Friedman was 2 for 2 on field goal tries and made all four extra-point kicks.
Wilsonville’s Chad Overholt, Colby Guenther, Jake Moore and Aaron Wilcox stood out in a defensive effort that Adam Guenther labeled great.

Thurston 35, Churchill 6
The Colts of Springfield showed little letdown from back-to-back OSAA Class 5A championships with the victory over the host Lancers of Eugene.
Thurston led 22-0 at halftime. Churchill junior Chace Pence scored as time expired to deny the Colts a shutout.
Leading the Thurston offensive performance in the opener was Dawson Muggy. He was the Colts’ JV quarterback two seasons ago and played wide receiver last season. He returned to quarterback to succeed two-time all-state honoree Cade Crist for his senior season.
Churchill’s most active defensive players included David Codington, Braden Rohde and Romynn Schaefer, each in on more than half a dozen tackles.
Pendleton 46, Parkrose 0
The Buckaroos scored on offense, defense and special teams in the win over the Broncos in Northeast Portland.
Tyasin Burns ran for three scores and returned a punt for a touchdown, and Zaanan Bane (nine carries, 69 yards) also ran for a touchdown.
Jack Davis was 9 of 11 passing for the Buckaroos, who scored on two safeties and got interceptions from Gabe Browning and Bane.
Hood River Valley 30, La Salle Prep 12
Tanner Fletcher eclipsed 200 yards and scored three touchdowns on the ground, and the Eagles powered their way to the win over the host Falcons in Milwaukie.
Fletcher has posted eight consecutive 100-yard games. Friday was the fourth of those eight in which he has reached 200 yards.
La Salle Prep’s Brody Crowley returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown, and the teams went into the locker room with the score 14-14.
Riley Peterson caught a touchdown pass from Ryan Rosumny for the Falcons’ other score.
Hillsboro 54, St. Helens 0
Slade Shufelt and Adonai Nava spearheaded the running game for the visiting Spartans, each posting a multi-touchdown game and eclipsing the 100-yard mark in the win over the Lions.
Shufelt’s efforts included a 60-plus-yard run in the second quarter, after Adonai went more than 30 yards on a tackle-breaking burst at the end of the first quarter.
Hillsboro’s defensive highlights included two takeaways and a goal-line stand in the third quarter.
Crescent Valley 12, South Albany 9
Freshman John Coiner returned a fumble more than 70 yards with about two minutes left for the go-ahead touchdown that sprang the Raiders of Corvallis to the victory over the host RedHawks.
South Albany’s Jerron Berry blocked a field goal try and returned the ball for South Albany’s touchdown.
Corvallis 21, McKay 7
Carter Steeves passed for three second-half touchdowns, two to Brady Hankins, as the host Spartans pulled away to defeat the Royal Scots of Salem.
Steeves was 13 of 17 for 215 yards and the three scores, against one interception. Garrett Holpuch was 6 of 13 for 73 yards.
Solomon Wolfe caught Steeves’ other touchdown pass, and Carson Wright had eight catches for 93 yards.
Quarterback Ui Ale ran for McKay’s touchdown. Chansse Lee led the receiving game for McKay, and Jonatan Rubio (interception) and Brian Coburn spearheaded the team’s defense.
Eagle Point 24, Springfield 7
Lucas Meerten returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown, springing the visiting Eagles to the win in Springfield.
Meerten, second-team all-division last season at wide receiver and defensive back, also had a receiving touchdown.
Reagan Scheffler led Eagle Point with 11 tackles and two forced fumbles.
Freshman Connor Dye rushed for more than 100 yards and scored the Millers’ touchdown.
Friday’s game was created this week after each team’s scheduled opponent was unable to play owing to coronavirus issues. Eagle Point was to play host to Roseburg, whereas Springfield was to cross I-5 and head north on Coburg Road to play Sheldon of Eugene.

CLASS 5A vs. CLASS 4A
Marist Catholic 42, North Bend 14
The Spartans of Eugene pulled away from a 7-7 game and took down the Bulldogs in North Bend. Senior Lucas Patterson and junior Lucas Tuski stood out on offense for Marist Catholic.
Willamette 40, North Eugene 21
Bryce Indell ran for three touchdowns to pace the Wolverines of Eugene to the victory over the visiting Highlanders. Willamette forced four first-half turnovers.

CLASS 4A
Banks 49, Astoria 18
Cooper Gobel completed 22 of 26 passes for 283 yards with five touchdowns in Banks’ home win over the Fishermen.
Astoria quarterback Bo Williams threw two touchdown passes to Colton McMaster, and the Fishermen got a touchdown on the ground from Michael Moore.
Banks’ Jamar Flippen was a force on both sides of the line of scrimmage. He had two interceptions and made eight tackles, and on offense the junior carried the ball 13 times for 81 yards and two touchdowns.
Chuck White caught two of Gobel’s touchdown passes and had 132 receiving yards.
Seaside 49, Valley Catholic 0
Senior running back Andrew Teubner, a returning all-Cowapa League selection, ran for three touchdowns to power the visiting Seagulls to the win over the Valiants of Beaverton.
Molalla 21, Madras 0
Matt Mueller had two interceptions to highlight a defense that shut out the White Buffaloes in Madras.
Isaac Thomas-Klementis directed Molalla’s offense, which got two touchdowns rushing and one through the air.
Gladstone 35, Estacada 22
Jude Ashpole, a 6-foot-4, 225-pound senior tight end, scored three touchdowns for the Gladiators, who took a 21-0 halftime lead on the Rangers in the victory in Gladstone.
Two early Estacada turnovers helped Gladstone forge its 21-point lead. Estacada pulled closer late on two long touchdown runs from quarterback Corey James.
Crook County 18, North Marion 7
Kaden Anderson threw a touchdown pass to Marcus Ledesma and returning all-state honoree Tanner Saucedo had seven receptions for 100 yards, but that wasn’t enough for the Huskies in the loss to the visiting Cowboys of Prineville in Aurora.
Cascade 41, Woodburn 0
A special-teams touchdown and nearly perfect accuracy in the passing game highlighted the Cougars’ victory over the Bulldogs in Woodburn.
David Kanoff returned a punt 60 yards for a touchdown, and he added a score in the running game. Jacob Hage completed 15 of 17 passes for 205 yards and a touchdown.
Blake Lewis carried 10 times for 95 yards and Isaac Schnepp had four catches for 70 yards.
Mazama 35, Henley 0
Tristan Lee connected with Cole Brosterhous on two touchdown passes, and Lee ran for the Vikings’ final touchdown in the victory over the visiting Hornets in a game pitting Klamath Falls schools.
Henley’s defense denied Mazama on a third-and-goal play from the Hornets’ 3-yard line at the end of the first half.
Elmira 20, Sweet Home 8
Ayden Wolgamott ran for two touchdowns and led the host Falcons to the victory over the Huskies.
Elmira also got a touchdown pass from Cobyn Herbert to Blake Wigham.
The Huskies’ Cade Gaskey scored on a six-yard run and ran in the two-point conversion.
Sweet Home coach Dustin Nichol said three times, bad snaps resulted in the Falcons taking possession in the red zone.
Hidden Valley 48, Phoenix 0
Linebackers Matt Iwamizu and Blake Schubert spearheaded a defense that shut out the host Pirates.
Quarterback Nate Vidlak passed for three touchdowns and ran for two for the Mustangs of Grants Pass. All three scoring passes went to Jeremiah Noga, and Tobias Powers had several explosive runs.

CLASS 4A vs. CLASS 3A
Vale 21, Baker 12
John Wolfe caught eight passes for 118 yards, and the Vale junior scored two long touchdowns in the host Vikings’ victory over the Bulldogs.
Wolfe scored on a 66-yard punt return and on an 82-yard catch-and-run pass play.
Vale bottled up Baker, allowing less than 10 yards of total offense until two minutes remained in the game.
Senior Kaden Myer, Baker’s starting quarterback, left the game with a shoulder injury in the first half.
Gabe Gambleton’s one-yard run pulled Baker within 7-6, which is the way the score stayed until the fourth quarter. After Wolfe’s punt-return touchdown, a takeaway gave Vale a short field, and the Vikings capitalized for their final touchdown.
Sutherlin 41, Klamath Union 6
Josh Davis scored three touchdowns and gobbled up 225 yards on the ground to lead the host Bulldogs to victory over the Pelicans.
Nyssa 46, Ontario 14
The Bulldogs defeated the host Tigers.
McLoughlin at Irrigon
What was scheduled as a regular-season game between the Class 4A Pioneers of Milton-Freewater and the Class 3A Knights was instead treated as a jamboree/intersquad scrimmage, McLoughlin coach Jorge Estrada said. McLoughlin is scheduled to play Class 2A Grant Union in John Day next Friday.
