STONY BROOK, N.Y.—Sophomore wide receiver Rayjoun Pringle (Dumfries, Va.) had a breakout game in the spring season opener and No. 5 Villanova (1-0, 1-0 CAA Football) returned to action for the first time in 461 days with a 16-13 win over Stony Brook (0-1, 0-1) at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Pringle hauled in eight receptions for a career-high 133 yards and a touchdown in the victory.
Senior quarterback Daniel Smith (Leesburg, Va.) displayed the same form under center that saw him throw for 3,274 yards during the 2019 season when he made his Wildcats debut. Smith was 14-of-29 through the air for 213 yards, including a 49-yard touchdown pass to Pringle with six minutes left in the second quarter. Junior running back Jalen Jackson (Richmond, Va.) scored on a six-yard touchdown run in the first quarter as Villanova build an early 6-0 advantage.
On the ensuing kickoff after Jackson's touchdown, an opportunistic Wildcats special teams unit recovered the ball at the Seawolves 26-yard line to give the Villanova offense a second straight possession. The drive resulted in a missed 37-yard field goal attempt and Stony Brook finally got the ball on offense for the first time. Junior cornerback Christian Benford (Randallstown, Md.) registered his seventh career interception at the Wildcats seven-yard line on the fifth play of the Seawolves drive. Villanova would end up having the ball in its hands for nearly 20 minutes in the first two quarters and took a 13-0 lead into halftime.
Both teams had to adjust to getting back on the field for the first time in more than 15 months. Although the Wildcats found the end zone on two of their first four drives, those were the only points scored by either team on a combined 13 possessions through the middle of the third quarter. Each side missed a field goal in the opening half and Villanova also had its first PAT attempt of the season blocked in the opening period. What the long layoff from the end of the 2019 season and a cold day where temperatures hovered only in the mid 30's could not slow down was the Wildcats ability to move the ball efficiently.
Villanova drove 72 yards on 14 plays on the first possession of the game which culminated in Jackson's third career rushing touchdown with 9:01 to play in the opening period. Smith was 6-of-8 for 46 yards and rushed for another 10 yards on the opening drive, with four of his completions going to Pringle for a total of 31 yards. In the second quarter, the Wildcats went 78 yards on six plays and Smith connected with Pringle to extend the lead to 13-0.
Stony Brook scored with six minutes to play in the third quarter when quarterback Tyquell Fields scored on a six-yard run to pull the Seawolves to within 13-7. Villanova kicker Cole Bunce (San Jose, Calif.), a graduate transfer from TCU who was making his Wildcats debut, kicked a 38-yard field goal with 10:51 left in the fourth quarter to extend the margin to 16-7.
Each team punted on its next possession after the Bunce field goal, but a Villanova punt was blocked and the Seawolves recovered the ball to set themselves up at the Wildcats 19-yard line with 3:27 to play. Jayden Cook scored on a two-yard run with 2:45 left, but after an offside penalty against Stony Brook moved the PAT attempt back five years the kick was missed and Villanova retained a three-point lead at 16-13.
Benford, who earlier gained seven yards on an interception return, recovered a Seawolves onside kick and the Wildcats took over from the Stony Brook 15-yard line with 2:45 to play. After the Seawolves challenged the spot of the ball following the onside kick, they were left with only one timeout remaining and Villanova ran out the clock with the ball in its hands to secure the win.
In addition to Pringle's big day receiving, sophomore wide receiver Jaaron Hayek (Wayne, N.J.) had six catches for 49 yards. Sophomore running back DeeWil Barlee (Upper Darby, Pa.) led the team's rushing attack with 11 carries for 53 yards.
Senior safety Nowoola Awopetu (Staten Island, N.Y.) had a team-high six tackles, including a tackle for loss and half a sack. The defense for the Wildcats recorded two sacks, one interception and a total of eight passes defended (seven pass breakups to go along with the INT).
The spring portion of what can still be considered the 2020 college football season consists of 11 teams playing six games on the CAA Football schedule, with teams vying for the league title and a spot in the field of 16 teams for the Division I Football Championships which was moved to the spring season due to the COVID pandemic. Saturday's contest against the Seawolves was the first of six games in a span of seven weeks for the Wildcats, who next play their home opener against Rhode Island next Saturday at 1 p.m.
