High school football, volleyball moved to spring - Times Union

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association, in a move Wednesday that seemed inevitable, made the decision to postpone football and volleyball until March 1, 2021. Both sports, deemed high-risk during the coronavirus pandemic, were slated to begin practicing Sept. 21 without the chance to play games.

The rest of the fall sports will remain on course for a Sept. 21 start of practice and are slated to contest their seasons this fall. The revised season for football and volleyball will be known as Fall Season II and is set to begin March 1 with practice. The start of the spring season has been pushed back until April 19.

"We've spent two days speaking with nearly 500 athletic directors across the state and it's clear that administering high-risk sports during the COVID-19 pandemic presents a significant challenge to our member schools," NYSPHSAA executive director Robert Zayas said. "These are unprecedented times and unfortunately, difficult decisions will have to be made to address this ongoing crisis. We continue to stay committed to providing support to our member schools and quality participation experiences for the students we serve."

"At least now we have a direction," Shaker football coach Greg Sheeler said. "The hardest thing for me has been not having answers for the kids. I have talked to a lot of coaches who have felt like we have been stringing the kids along. To have some finality for the fall and to move to the spring allows us to start the school year in a positive way."

"It is just a crazy time for everyone. We're frustrated we didn't get the chance to show we could do this safe for our kids in the fall," Burnt Hills girls' volleyball coach Gary Bynon said. "I met with my kids. We will always do what Burnt Hills volleyball does and get ready for our season March 1."

Troy football coach Bobby Burns, like so many other football coaches, expressed disappointment seeing a report that more than 1,000 high school football games around the country have been contested without a positive COVID-19 case.

"Other people throughout the country have proved that it can be done, and other states have higher infection rates than we do," Burns said. "Our governor brags about that our rates are so low, so let us play."

Burns, obviously, was upset upon hearing Wednesday's decision.

"I am kind of over that now, so it is about the positives and getting our kids ready to play," Burns said. "Hopefully, COVID is behind us by March or we have a vaccine. The determining factor for us will be if they can play basketball. If we get through a basketball season in New York being indoors in that close vicinity and get through that, then I don't think there is any question that we will play."
