New Mexico became the first state to cancel high school football for the 2020 season on Thursday as Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham rolled back the state’s re-opening after an uptick on coronavirus cases.
New Mexico has had 14,251 COVID-19 cases and 533 deaths.
Gov. Grisham’s new order Thursday canceled the fall contact sports of football and soccer at least for the time being. Grisham said other fall sports would be canceled as well if school re-opening is delayed. She said contact sports may be allowed to begin seasons later in the school year pending the containing of COVID cases.
The New Mexico Activities Association announced the 2020 football and soccer seasons would be postponed to the spring semester. A plan aimed at ensuring all sports seasons are played in the 2020-2021 school year is expected soon, the NMAA reported.
Grisham’s new order also closed indoor dining and state parks to out-of-state guests.

New Mexico becomes the first state to officially move high school football back at a minimum. Florida, New Jersey, Arizona, Tennessee are among states also looking at later start dates.
In Alabama, officials have expressed optimism against beginning the football season on time on Aug. 20. State superintendent Eric Mackey has said schools will re-open next month.
“I know this news is a tough pill to swallow for many New Mexicans,” Grisham said. “This public health crisis has been an overwhelming challenge for all of us – not least business-owners and workers whose lives and livelihoods have been upended as this virus spreads. But as I’ve said many times throughout this pandemic: We will not wait, as a state, for the worst to occur to make the hard decisions. We will not wait for rising cases to turn into rising hospitalizations and deaths as in our neighboring states.”
Human Services Secretary David R. Scrase said COVID cases in New Mexico are climbing at an alarming rate and cases in people under 30 have nearly tripled.
