Top Competitions Countdown: No. 1, Football Stuns Nebraska In Overtime - CUBuffs.com

BOULDER - Try drawing up the most thrilling scenarios as a sports fan. You beat your biggest rival in your home stadium (and their fans travel well). You come back from a three-score halftime deficit. You win in overtime. Your team completes a play that breaks a record in your sport. You beat a ranked team.

Imagine the feeling of achieving all five of those scenarios in the SAME GAME. This happened when CU rallied from a 17-0 halftime deficit to beat 25th-ranked Nebraska 34-31 in overtime in Boulder on Sept. 7. The feelings felt by Buffs fans inside Folsom Field that day may never be matched again. This game was an easy selection as No. 1 on our countdown of top competitions from 2019-20.

It was a rough start for the Buffs, there's no sugarcoating that. Nebraska outgained CU 266-84 in total offense in the first half to lead 17-0. The Huskers came up with big play after big play.

But momentum started to shift in the third quarter. CU's defense stepped up, blanking Nebraska during the period, and freshman running back Jaren Mangham finally got the Buffs on the board with 1:42 left to trim the deficit to 17-7.

After CU's defense held Nebraska at bay to force a punt, the Huskers seemed to gain some of that momentum back when they downed the punt inside the five near the north endzone. But the next play was one for the ages.

Quarterback Steven Montez handed off to Alex Fontenot to run the ball up the middle, but Fontenot pitched the ball back to Montez, who heaved a 96-yard touchdown to K.D. Nixon, the longest flea flicker in college football history. Just like that, the Buffs were within three points at 17-14 with over 14 minutes left in regulation.

But Nebraska answered back immediately, scoring a 75-yard touchdown on its first play to lead 24-14 with 14:09 remaining in the fourth.

Another touchdown by Mangham and a field goal by James Stefanou tied the game at 24-24 with 8:30 to go as the offense found its groove.

The Huskers marched down the field in eight plays to regain a 31-24 lead with 5:49 on the clock. Things looked even more dire when CU fumbled the ensuing kickoff, giving Nebraska the ball back.

But the Buffs defense held strong, and after pounding out a 10-play drive, the offense tied the game up as Tony Brown made a spectacular catch in the right-back corner of the endzone on a 26-yard strike from Montez with 46 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

In overtime, Stefanou converted a 34-yard field goal on the first possession to put Colorado ahead 34-31. After a third-down Mustafa Johnson sack, his third of the game, the Huskers badly missed a 48-yard field goal and the Buffs fans that stuck around rushed the field to celebrate one of the most thrilling, memorable games in CU history.

Montez finished the day 28-of-41 for 375 yards and two touchdowns. Nixon caught six passes for 148 yards. Mangham rushed for 44 yards on 11 carries. But despite the rough start, it was the defense that allowed the offense to get back into the game with a strong second half. CU outgained Nebraska 380-203 after halftime and had seven tackles for loss, six sacks, two fumble recoveries and one interception in the game.

The Buffs finished the year 5-7 with wins over rivals Nebraska and Colorado State and are excited for the future with new head coach Karl Dorrell, who took over the program in February.
