Oregon, USC are the best Pac-12 College Football Playoff picks - 247Sports

On the third episode of the Barton & Bud Show, a new podcast from 247Sports, Analysts Barton Simmons and Bud Elliott hosted an 8-round draft of college football playoff teams. A tiebreaker has been established as teams making the NY6 bowls. The draft was done in a snake format, like many standard fantasy drafts. And to make it real, we put some stakes with it, with the loser of the draft donating $100 to the charity of the winner's choice. There was a lot of smack talk, analysis, and stealing of each other's next pick. Listen to the show to get the full breakdown.

With picks 10 and 11, Barton Simmons took Oregon and USC to make the playoff.

Barton: I'm going to pick the Pac-12. I'm going to pick Oregon and USC. Oregon is self-explanatory. They were the best team in the Pac-12 last year. They return a loaded defense. The hit they could have taken from the NFL draft was absorbed when those guys decided to come back. Kayvon Thibodeaux is in Year 2. Obviously they need a QB, but I feel good about Anthony Brown, not necessarily as the answer, but now because if Tyler Shough is the QB, he beat out Anthony Brown instead of some guys who never played before. The receiving group will be improved. And the offensive line is awesome. Oregon is the safest Pac-12 Champion pick.

With USC, that is a talented roster. Kedon Slovis is the QB, who we all think is very good. And JT Daniels is the backup. The receiving group is one of the best in the country. The RB room is deep. There are a lot of different types of backs they can use. And defensively, they have Jay Tufele, Marlon Tuipilotu, and guys who were five-star prospects. And they have a fresh voice now at defensive coordinator, a salty group of linebackers, and a salty crop of defensive backs. And I like, with the schedule, that they play Alabama up front. I think Alabama wins that game, but if USC comes out and is competitive, maybe a one-score game, and somehow they can use that as a springboard for the rest of the season. Yes -- they have to run the table the rest of the way, but I think with that roster it is not inconceivable that USC could put together a bounceback year with Clay Helton on the hot seat.

Bud: They can afford an opening loss, but it cannot be a blowout loss. But if they are good enough to avoid a blowout to Bama or Ohio State, the logic follows that they are probably good enough to run the table in the Pac-12. I like these picks.
