Replacing a legend can be a pressure-filled situation for some.
Not for Scott Wattigny, however, who was named Catholic of New Iberia’s head football coach and athletic director last week. Wattigny will replace the legendary Brent Indest, who went 72-13 in seven seasons at Catholic including a state championship in 2017.
“I don't know that I feel pressure simply because I'm replacing him," said Wattigny, who spent the last five seasons at Archbishop Hannan in Covington.

“I think more than anything, I'm excited for the challenge to be at Catholic High, both as the football coach, but also the AD."
Wattigny isn’t a stranger to Iberia Parish. Wattigny called New Iberia home for two years while he was an assistant coach at Vermilion Catholic. During his time at VC, the Eagles won the state championship in 2013 and they had several matchups against Indest and the Panthers.

“We played Catholic High those years I was at VC,” Wattigny said. “I saw what Coach Indest had done with the program and I followed what they did from afar. I saw when he stepped down and I decided to apply for the job.
“When I went through the interview process and I got to the school, it felt very authentic to me. The community was so enriching and so vibrant. I knew that this was going to be a great place to raise my family.”
Wattigny said he doesn’t intend to change much when it comes to what the Catholic offense has been doing. He said he’s been in contact with Indest and he intends to lean on him when he needs to.
“Coach said he is just a phone call away if I need him,” Wattigny said. “He did a great job with the wing-T and I plan to continue a lot of what he did. I’ll add in a few things, but if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
“I’m coming in and we’re going to keep a lot of the concepts in place. We’ll expand upon it a bit, but the roux has already been established. I’m just trying to throw some flavor in the gumbo.”
