We have daily reminders now that nothing is guaranteed, not even the upcoming high school football season.
However, preseason camp is a long way down the road in August, so why not take a quick look at some of the more interesting match ups from the 2020 Mid-Penn Conference regular season?
Here we go.
Wilson at Central Dauphin, 7 p.m. – August 28
It’s the celebrated Bulldogs from Berks County, via the Lancaster-Lebanon League of course, landing at Speed Ebersole Stadium for a romp with the Rams. We can just leave it there. QB Kaleb Brown (1,430 pass, 770 rush) returns to pilot Wilson and he’ll have 750-yard rusher Mason Lenart behind him. On the other side will be QB Max Mosey (2,069 pass, 15 TDs) and All-State RB-LB Timmy Smith (1,351 rush, 17 TDs). And, the Rams owe the Bulldogs one after dropping a 21-13 “opening night” battle to Wilson last year.
Manheim Central at Cumberland Valley, 7 p.m. – August 28
No central Pa. football team has more District 3 titles than Manheim Central. Cumberland Valley is third on that list with 15, just three behind the Barons’ mark. The point is two of District 3’s benchmark programs at the Chap? Sign us up. It’s also an interested initial test for CV alum and new head coach Josh Oswalt.
St. Mary’s Ryken (Md.) at Bishop McDevitt, 7 p.m. – August 28
It’s always interesting when an out-of-state opponent stops by. The visiting Knights from Leonardtown – yes, where the national oyster-shucking championships are held annually – will enter off 9-3 campaign. St. Mary’s will meet another quality McD squad paced by QB Lek Powell (2,054 pass, 18 TDs) and fast-rising RB Marquese Williams. The latter did little except run for 1,000-plus yards and 15 TDs as a freshman.
Steel-High at Sto-Rox, 11 a.m. – August 29
We’re hoping the Rollers spring for a Friday night stay in Pittsburgh. A couple of bake sales might cover it because 210 miles to suit up on a Saturday morning is tough. So is the opponent. While 3,000-yard passer and All-State pick Eric Wilson has moved on, playmakers Zay Davis and Diontae Givens will mae the Vikings go in McKees Rocks.
Harrisburg at Bishop McDevitt, 7 p.m. – September 11
For myriad reasons it’s been an on-and-off affair between these two proud and successful programs. But it’s still one of the best rivalries in the MPC. With no dust-ups in 2014-15 and 2018-19, the now-suburban Crusaders are 5-1 vs. the Cougars since 2010.
Susquehanna Township at Manheim Central, 7 p.m. – September 11
The Indians have opened their last two campaigns against Manheim Central, and lost both. So, squaring off with the Barons again offers a true reading of what’s to come. It’s an important test with Susquehanna Township shipping off to the Colonial Division under the Mid-Penn’s two-year realignment.
CD East at State College, 7 p.m. – September 25
State College will again be among the favorites to claim a Commonwealth Division title. The unpredictable Panthers will be the first divisional team to square off with the Little Lions at newly renovated Memorial Field. The two-year project is scheduled for completion July 31.
Steel-High at Middletown, 2 p.m. – October 2 With just six teams in the Mid-Penn Capital this season, Middletown’s matinee against the Rollers actually starts the division race for both sides.
Northern at Greencastle-Antrim, 7 p.m. – October 16 There’s a good chance Northern’s deep road trip to Kaley Field will cause some movement in the Colonial pecking order. The Polar Bears, despite some deep cuts offensively due to graduation, should possess one of the division’s top defenses.
Line Mountain at James Buchanan, 7 p.m. – October 30
We are generally excited that the Liberty Division is back online. Remember, the Rockets bowed out of the MPC following the 2016 season to recharge the program to competitive status. The Eagles, meanwhile, are among five former Tri-Valley League franchises that needed a new. In addition, we’d like an early reservation on the plane bringing the Eagles from Herndon to Mercersburg.
