Texas A&M Football fans have had a pretty great past week. For starters, college football is back — even though A&M’s game may have been a nail-biter for a bit longer than expected, Jimbo Fisher’s squad asserted its dominance and came home with a comfortable win.
But before this game even took place, A&M fans had an up-and-down couple of weeks leading up to the season. Here’s why.
To kick things off, the Aggies were given the news that defensive tackle McKinnley Jackson was arrested and, as a result, suspended from playing football. This was originally thought to be a situation that would be quickly resolved, but a few weeks later, he would not suit up for the Texas A&M Football team against Kent State.
No worries, A&M has a lot of depth on the defensive line. And actually, on a somewhat unrelated note, that depth performed extremely well, with players like Shemar Turner and Jardin Gilbert each recording their first career sacks, but that’s neither here nor there.
That depth, however, would have to be put to more use than expected, as another experienced defensive lineman would be ruled out with his own arrest in Micheal Clemons. Clemons is a 6th-year senior and was thought to be a defensive leader for this team.
The Texas A&M Football team gave out updates on the suspension of their two defensive linemen
Thankfully, we’re not in the dark — at least not fully. On Monday, updates were given on the status of both of these players by Jimbo Fisher in his weekly press conference. According to Brent Zwerneman of the Houston Chronicle, here’s what Fisher said about the status of each of his star defensive linemen.
If for some reason you cannot read the tweet, it states that Micheal Clemons will be back against Colorado on Saturday. In a game that could send the Aggies onto upset alert, this will be huge for Fisher’s squad.
Unfortunately, McKinnley Jackson will still be out. As things stand, it’s unclear when he’ll return, though his absence will be felt. Thankfully, as mentioned, Texas A&M’s depth on the defensive line was on full display against Kent State. Still, this was a MAC team with MAC offensive linemen.
On Sunday, the Aggies will be taking on a Power Five team in Colorado who was one of the more positive surprises in college football last season. With Clemons back, the defensive line should see improvements, but this will be more of a challenge than last week’s contest.
Hopefully, Jackson manages to get back onto the field sooner rather than later, as the Alabama game continues to creep up.
