Spring does not officially start until March 20, but the calendar’s third month is here, and so let’s just go ahead and say that it has.
Cold weather, and maybe even some snow, may still be on the horizon, of course, but temperatures are slowly creeping up and the countdown is officially on to on-field practices.
Penn State is rarely out of the news cycle, and this month should be no different. Here are five things we’ll be keeping an eye on over the next 30 days.
Putting the pads back on
Last year at this time, Penn State was just weeks away from completing spring break and then starting a stretch of 14 practices that would culminate with the Blue-White game.
Then, things changed.
Everything is not back to normal, of course, amid the coronavirus pandemic. But, we’re inching closer, and one sign of that is the expectation that spring practice will be held this year in as close to a traditional way as possible.
“We’re moving ahead and prepared and planning on doing it all,” Penn State coach James Franklin said in January. “But [coaching in the COVID era] has taught me a valuable lesson — that I’m going to have to be prepared for whatever comes and we have to be flexible. Right now, we’re planning today through training camp like we normally would until someone tells us differently.”
There’s been no hint yet that things will not go off as scheduled. The program has not officially announced when drills will begin, but the week of March 15 is as good a guess as any based on how the calendar has worked in the past during the Franklin era. It’s still unknown whether or not there will be a Blue-White game, but it feels unlikely.
Pro Day
Yes, there will be a Pro Day this year, according to Franklin’s recent appearance on NFL Network.
It’s slated to be held on March 25 inside of the Lasch Building and Holuba Hall, and will take on extra importance this year for many former Lions, seeing that there was no NFL Combine in Indianapolis this year.
Many will be excited to see what feats of strength and skill Micah Parsons, Pat Freiermuth, and Jayson Oweh display, but this is a chance for others to show scouts why they should play at the next level, too.
Recruiting
No, there will not be visits this March because of the ongoing NCAA dead period that lasts through May, but that doesn’t mean the hunt for top talent simply stops.
Instead, it’ll be fascinating to see how the Lions showcase things virtually during on-field work. It’s important that they capitalize in this area, because prospects are going to want to see what Mike Yurcich’s offense looks like and how Anthony Poindexter and Ty Howle coach, among other things.
Penn State also has to fill two recruiting operations jobs after Eric Thatcher left for an on-field job at Albany while Charles Walker took an analyst role with the Atlanta Falcons.
Will anyone hit the portal?
Generally speaking, anyone who was going to search for a new college football home has already declared that he will. But, it’s not out of the question that a few guys could be left off the spring practice roster as they search for a better place to play.
With that said, it’s expected that anyone who has stuck around for this long will at least participate in drills before deciding what to do based on whatever feedback and opportunities they receive by mid-April. After all, anyone enrolled in classes isn’t leaving until they get credit for the classes they’re taking at the end of the semester.
Roster updates
Who changed positions? Did someone massively reshape their body during winter workouts? And what numbers will the new guys get?
All of that information will be revealed whenever the program releases its updated roster as practices begin, and there are almost always a few surprises and interesting tidbits to be found.
