One year ago, sports came to a halt. Tonight, sports fans in Northern Nevada will be treated to an abundance of options with Wolf Pack basketball playing San Diego State in the Mountain West Tournament semifinals; Nevada baseball and softball in action; and a full slate of high school football games.
McQueen High travels to Spanish Springs in Nevada Sports Net's game of the week, which will air live on NSN at 6 p.m. McQueen is coming off a narrow win over 3A North Valleys in its season opener while Spanish Springs looks to rebound from a loss to Bishop Manogue a week ago.
“We want to bounce back after a loss last week,” Hummel said. “They’re coming off of a win. We obviously have to be ready for them. They have some really good players in the skill position and they have a lot of returners as well that are experienced varsity high school football players. We’re looking forward to the challenge.”
Spanish Springs fell to the region's top team, Bishop Manogue, 38-16, last week. Hummel says there’s no excuse, and the Cougars have to be better if they want a shot against the Lancers.
“We didn’t execute very well in any phase of the football game last week,” Hummel said. "Credit to Bishop Manogue. They’re a good football team, but we didn’t play up to our potential and we’ve been stressing a lot of stuff this week. Focusing on the details and all the little stuff we were messing up last week. Hopefully we see a better product come Friday night.”
Hummel said the unusual start to the season, with the sport being cleared to play in Nevada at the high school level less than a month ago, has created some challenges.
“There’s so many moving parts, so many different things you have to work on," Hummel said. "With technique, conditioning and weight training and you’re not even talking about the schematics of everything that have to fall into it, too. With everything being very short in terms of our time frame to get ready everybody’s had to put themselves in a fast-forward position or a hyper-speed position in terms of the learning curve. Luckily, we’ve got quite a few experienced players as well. We just have to do a lot of polishing from last week. It really showed us that we need to work on this week, and we’re hoping for a better product come Friday.”
McQueen is coming off a win against North Valleys, although the 14-11 decision was closer than expected considering the Panthers play at the 3A level and the Lancers have two national-level college recruits in offensive star Ashton Hayes and defensive star Robby Snelling. Lancers head coach Jim Snelling said his team has a lot of improving to do.
“Spanish Springs is always a really good competitive program and we got the first-game jitters out of the way and we’re looking to improve this coming week and have a great contest,” Snelling said. “We’ve got some really talented players. We’re very strong at the skill positions, and we’ve gotta improve upfront from what we did last week. It’s not gonna be any one player. It’s gonna be a team effort.
“Finding out that we’re gonna have a season on the 13th of last month and then turning around and having a game three weeks later is tough on everybody, but we’re just grateful we get to get the kids out there playing running around and having a season.”
Kickoff for the game is 6 p.m. on NSN with a Friday Night Lights recap airing on the 11 p.m. News 4 broadcast.
