Footage from Thursday night depicts referee Fred Gracia announcing the ejection and Duron rushing onto the field to tackle the official. Videos of the incident promptly went viral on social media.

Duron was escorted out of Richard R. Flores Stadium by school district police officers. On Friday morning, he was charged with class A assault, with a cash surety bond of $10,000 set and later posted by Duron, The Monitor reported.

Gracia was evaluated for a potential shoulder injury and concussion-like symptoms. His daughter Iris tweeted early Friday that her father is "doin' alright."

Per the McAllen newspaper, Duron was suspended for the remainder of the 2019-20 soccer season after a similar on-field incident against Edinburg Vela last season.

“I can’t release any information on that and I apologize for that,” Edinburg head coach JJ Lejia told reporters of Thursday's incident following the game. “I hope you understand. I want this (moment) to be about our program and all the other kids we had on the field tonight.”

Thursday night was supposed to be an elimination game for the schools, with the winner going to the postseason.

However, on Friday morning, the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District decided to remove the Bobcats from the postseason following Thursday's incident, with that spot going to PSJA instead.

"The district has decided to remove the Edinburg High School football team from the playoffs after an unexpected incident involving a student that occurred during a football game on December 3, 2020," the district said in a statement to KRGV, the Rio Grande Valley's CBS affiliate. "We extend a sincere apology to the referee and his family. On behalf of the Edinburg CISD Board of Trustees and administration, we apologize to the athletes, staff and our school community.

"We will take the appropriate disciplinary action onc we understand the facts and circumstances underlining this incident. The district takes these matters very seriously; however, we cannot comment further on a pending investigation."

The Texas Association of Sports Officials also announced it is collaborating with the University Interscholastic League on an investigation “to bring this matter to a suitable disposition.”

TASO included in its statement, “Unfortunately, this type of blindsided assault on an official while working on the field is not new to Texas football.”
