Football: With finish line in sight, Week 8 cancellations begin rolling in - nj.com

The second week of the NJSIAA football postseason, Week 8, with games scheduled between Thursday and next Monday, may be the last time parents get an opportunity to see their children play football.

Confusion and contradiction were in order on Monday when the NJSIAA announced on-field personnel -- players, coaches, trainers, officials, cheerleaders -- would not count toward reduced attendance limits at outdoor events imposed by Gov. Phil Murphy.

Hours later, in his daily press conference, Murphy cut attendance at outdoor events from 500 to 150 starting Nov. 23. He also made it clear persons on the field would count toward attendance.

“Right now there is a discrepancy between what was released by the NJSIAA and the executive order regarding outdoor gatherings,” said Sen. Paul A. Sarlo (D-Bergen), who is also a member of the NJSIAA executive committee, told NJ.com Monday. “We are working toward getting clarification and hope to have the situation cleared up in the next couple of days.”

This weekend, however, up to 500 fans will be able to watch the final games of 2020 for many programs across the state. The question: How many games will there be? Last week, 56 teams canceled games.

There was a flurry of cancellations and schedule changes Monday as COVID-19 cases and deaths and hospitalizations caused by coronavirus soar across New Jersey. By 11 a.m. Tuesday morning there were already 34 cancellations.
