First the California Golden Bears were scheduled to open the 2020 season on Aug. 29, then Sept. 26, and then Nov. 7. Two days away from kickoff, the Golden Bears' 2020 football season has been delayed yet again. Saturday's season-opener against Washington was canceled due to COVID-19 related issues, leaving Cal hopeful to open the season on Nov. 14 at Arizona State. Cal football players took to social media Thursday to voice their disappointment.
Starting safety Daniel Scott wrote, "tough, very tough," with a discouraged emoji. "I just want to play ball," wrote cornerback Chigozie Anuseim. Star linebacker Kuony Deng simply tweeted a heartbroken emoji.
Cal junior wide receiver Nikko Remigio was among the most vocal Golden Bears on social media. He wrote a series of tweets, reading separately in order, "WOW...
"UNBELIEVABLE! WE WANT TO PLAY! LET US PLAY!
"We have the resources and testing to navigate safely. Our players feel safe and ARE SAFE! LET US PLAY!!!
"The inconsistencies of how this is being handled from conference to conference is EXTREMELY disappointing...
"We hold meetings outside, lift weights outside, have limitations on how many people can be on the field to prevent the spread of COVID. On top of all of that, WE GET TESTED DAILY... 7-8 times a week! Our medical staff and coaches ENSURE OUR SAFETY!"
A positive COVID-19 test announced by Cal on Wednesday afternoon put the game in doubt. No other positive tests have been announced, but such a large amount of players sidelined due to contact tracing put the Golden Bears' feasibility to play Saturday in doubt. The game was declared a no-contest on Thursday.
The Pac-12 announced the cancelation on Thursday, releasing the following statement: "The Pac-12 has approved a request from Cal to cancel the Washington at Cal football game scheduled for November 7. The decision was made under the Pac-12's football game cancellation policy due to Cal not having the minimum number of scholarship players available for the game as a result of a positive football student-athletic COVID-19 case and resulting isolation of additional football student-athletes under contact tracing protocols.
"Under Conference policy, the game will be declared a no contest. The health and safety of our student-athletes and all those connected to Pac-12 football programs will continue to be our No. 1 priority."

Last month, the Pac-12 updated its game cancellation policy as it relates to COVID-19.
“The Pac-12 has established minimum thresholds to play a football game of at least 53 scholarship players available to participate and the following minimum number of position scholarship players available to begin a game: seven (7) offensive linemen, one (1) quarterback and four (4) defensive linemen,” the policy states. “Each institution shall provide a complete roster by position to the Conference office prior to the season.
"The impacted institution has the option to play the game with fewer than the 53 scholarship players or fewer than the minimum number of position players listed above if it elects to do so. Otherwise, upon approval by the Commissioner, the game would be rescheduled or declared a no contest.”
