Area high school football games to watch - Houston Chronicle

Here are some of the best high school football games to watch this week:

Katy vs. Tompkins, 6 p.m. Thursday, Legacy Stadium
In a regular, regular season – the “old” normal – this week typically included a few spotlight-worthy district finales and plenty of postseason speculation before the start of the bi-district playoffs in mid-November. This year, we’re only halfway through district, and teams like Atascocita and Dickinson still have played only a handful of games. But this 19-6A contest might as well be a Week 10 showdown filled with the appropriate intensity. It likely will decide the district championship, and yes, we all know who is the favorite. Area 6A No. 2 Katy (5-0, 2-0) is an 11-time defending district champion, and No. 5 Tompkins (5-0, 3-0), in its sixth varsity season, is searching for its first title. But Tompkins put up double-digit wins the last two years, played well against Katy last season – especially late in a 35-30 defeat – and currently is riding a streak of three consecutive shutout victories.

Manvel vs. Hightower, 7 p.m. Thursday, Hall Stadium
Hightower QB Jakolby Longino has arrived, making the area 5A No. 6 Hurricanes (2-2, 1-1) a must-see team. The UTEP pledge was nominated for Mr. Texas Football Player of the Week after throwing for a career-high six touchdowns and 319 yards, and rushing for two TDs, in a 65-45 win over Angleton. He has 833 yards, 11 TDs and no INTs on 61-of-99 passing through four games, after throwing for 1,514 yards and 11 TDs, with six INTs, in 11 games last season. But Hightower’s been up and down while No. 3 Manvel has held steady, with its only slipup against area 6A No. 1 North Shore. The Mavericks (3-1, 1-0) also handled Angleton their last time out, winning 49-28 before a bye last week. RBs De’Monte Seymore and Ty Harris combined to rush for 437 yards and six TDs in that one.

Memorial vs. Cy-Fair, 7 p.m. Friday, Pridgeon Stadium
Memorial (5-1, 4-0) picked up points in this week’s 6A media poll as area voters took notice of the Mustangs’ four-game winning streak. Their only loss was to No. 12 Pearland and they’re coming off a hard-fought, 17-10 win over Stratford spearheaded by workhorse RB Carson Zahn (32-141, one TD rushing). But are they ready for the Bobcats? They’re holding steady at No. 3, behind only North Shore and Katy, and they just annihilated Northbrook 80-0 without four-star RB L.J. Johnson – who reportedly is eying Texas A&M, Texas, LSU and Oklahoma as his top four college choices – recording a single carry. Cy-Fair (6-0, 4-0) beat Stratford 45-0 and hasn’t been seriously tested since a 13-10 win over Cypress Ranch in its season opener.

Episcopal vs. Kinkaid, 7 p.m. Friday, Barnhart Stadium
Whereas Katy and Tompkins are halfway through district, Kinkaid (6-0) and Episcopal (2-3) are playing their final game of the season after the Southwest Preparatory Conference opted to cancel its season and playoffs due to coronavirus concerns. That means the Falcons and Knights technically are independents this year, but this might as well be for the district championship. Kinkaid is No. 1 in the area private-school poll and Episcopal is No. 3. The Falcons are coming off a 36-8 win over St. John’s, and the Knights topped St. John’s 26-7 two weeks ago. Episcopal beat Kinkaid 31-17 in district and 42-21 in the SPC 4A final last season.

Foster vs. Paetow, 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Legacy Stadium
Foster (4-0, 3-0) cruised past Kempner 41-0 after edging No. 6 Hightower 35-34 two weeks ago in a back-and-forth thriller showcasing QB Phillip Amy’s passing ability. The Falcons were up 39-0 at halftime against the Cougars. The Falcons also rolled Lamar Consolidated 79-7 earlier this season but this is a big test for the area’s top-ranked 5A team. No. 4 Paetow (5-0, 3-0) is playing well and trying to establish its brand in the area ranks, and it’s coming off back-to-back shutouts against Wisdom (64-0) and Terry (48-0). QB Channing Dumas Jr. threw for 144 yards and two TDs, and rushed for a score in the win over the Rangers.
