10 football teams eliminated from playoffs due to state COVID metrics map - West Virginia MetroNews

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — When the state’s weekly COVID metrics map was released shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday night, ten high school football teams saw their respective seasons end without losing a playoff game.

Six counties that were hopeful for a turn in color from red/orange to gold/yellow/green did not receive good news, and teams in those orange counties were eliminated from the playoff brackets. They are:

  • Jackson County (Ripley)
  • Marshall County (John Marshall)
  • Mingo County (Tug Valley)
  • Ohio County (Wheeling Park, Wheeling Central Catholic)
  • Putnam County (Buffalo, Hurricane, Poca)
  • Wood County (Parkersburg, Williamstown)

As a result, ten of the eleven games originally scheduled for Sunday have been canceled:

  • Class AAA: No. 16 John Marshall at No. 1 Cabell Midland
  • Class AAA: No. 15 Ripley at No. 2 South Charleston
  • Class AAA: No. 10 Princeton at No. 7 Wheeling Park
  • Class AAA: No. 11 Hurricane at No. 6 Spring Valley
  • Class AAA: No. 9 Spring Mills at No. 8 Parkersburg
  • Class AA: No. 9 Poca at No. 8 Robert C. Byrd
  • Class A: No. 13 Wheeling Central Catholic at No. 4 St. Marys
  • Class A: No. 12 Buffalo at No. 5 Midland Trail
  • Class A: No. 16 Tygarts Valley at No. 1 Tug Valley
  • Class A: No. 11 Tolsia at No. 6 Williamstown

The Class AA opening-round game between No. 15 Clay County and No. 2 Bluefield remains on as scheduled for 2 p.m. at Mitchell Stadium.

On Thursday, Mineral County Schools were removed from the bracket due to rising cases in that county. Class AA No. 3 Frankfort and No. 7 Keyser were eliminated.

As of 6:45 p.m. Saturday evening, 26 teams remain in playoff contention. Of those 26, 6 are from counties that are now listed in orange. They are Spring Valley and Tolsia (Wayne County), Elkins and Tygarts Valley (Randolph County), East Hardy (Hardy County) and Midland Trail (Fayette County). For those teams to play in the quarterfinals, their county must drop to gold or better on the November 21 state map release. They will then be eligible to play their quarterfinal games on November 22.
