Scarlet Nation's weekly collection of news, tidbits and interesting college football storylines returns as we highlight the latest from the college football landscape across the nation.

FBS Kickoff
Week 1 of college football approaches as the conferences electing to play kick off this Friday. The featured game this weekend is Monday night’s contest between BYU (Independent) and Navy (AAC), with both teams coming off bowl appearances in 2019. The Labor Day game will mark the third meeting between the two. The Cougars and Midshipmen will also participate in the first true night game at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium since 2005 when Navy lost a hard-fought 40-38 game to Stanford. The game will be conducted without fans and ESPN will be broadcasting at 8 p.m.

Leach calling the shots
Mike Leach, in his first year as head coach of Mississippi State, will once again act as his own offensive coordinator.  Leach has always called his own plays throughout his head coaching career at Texas Tech, Washington State and now Mississippi State. Steve Spurrier, Jr. will once again be his wide receivers coach, as he was for the past two seasons at Washington State.

High Priced Ticket
The most expensive ticket for a week one game is the SMU vs Texas State contest this Saturday. The lowest listed price for a ticket, according to ESPN, is $99. The Bobcats' seating is limited to 25% percent capacity or about 7,500 fans. SMU is coming off a terrific 10 win season. Texas State was 3-9 last year.

B1G Anniversary
The Big Ten Network was launched on August 30, 2007, with Big Ten Tonight as its inaugural program. The network aired its first live telecasts two days later on September 1, which included a football game between then-FCS Appalachian State and Michigan. The game gained national attention for its upset victory; being the first win by a Division I FCS team over a ranked Division I FBS team since Division I was split into two subdivisions by the NCAA in 1978.

A decade-old win for Rutgers
Almost 10 years ago to the day, Rutgers opened up the 2010 season on a Thursday night. The Sept 2 resulted in a 31-0 win over Norfolk State. In the victory, Joe Martinek carried the ball  20 times for 109 yards and a touchdown while  Tom Savage completed 10 of 19 passes for 148 yards and a score. Mohamed Sanu finished with three receptions for 65 yards and a touchdown. The officially announced attendance on the night was 46,311 inside Rutgers Stadium.

Notre Dame crowd policy announced
Notre Dame has announced that stadium capacity will be at 20% or less and tickets will be limited to Notre Dame students, faculty, parents of players, and staff. No outside fans will be allowed. Masks will be required, and no tailgating will be allowed.

Did you know…
----The oldest player in college football last season was 33-year-old Colorado State walk-on Joshua Griffin. A highly decorated Army ranger, Griffin did six tours of Iraq and Afghanistan, and was a member of the special-ops team.

----President Dwight ‘Ike’ Eisenhower played football for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. In the days when players appeared on both sides of the ball during games, Ike was a running back on offense and a linebacker on defense. In November of 1912, Eisenhower severely hurt his knee in a game against Tufts and his playing days came to an end. He was so depressed that he seriously considered quitting the Academy. He recalled years later that “Life seemed to have little meaning. A need to excel was almost gone.” Ike’s spirits soon recovered and he coached West Point’s junior varsity football.

Back in the Day
----Eighteen players were killed playing college football in 1905. Columbia suspended its team because of the deaths and even President Roosevelt got involved.

----The first forward pass was in 1906. It took approximately 45 years of football before Bradbury Robinson of Saint Louis University decided to lob the ball to teammate Jack Schneider, who caught his second pass for a touchdown.

----The forward pass used to come with a 15-yard penalty for incompletions.

----Oklahoma was not even a state when the Red River Shootout game with the University of Texas first started. The rivalry launched in 1900; Oklahoma joined the union seven years later.

----The Tennessee Vols chose their mascot, Smokey the blue tick coon hound, in a halftime contest in 1953.The dog howled when his name was announced, delighting the crowd and winning the privilege of serving as the mascot.

----Penn State’s colors were once black and pink. A team taking the field in pink would have better claim to the Cowardly Lions than the Nittany Lions.

----Football chains have been used in football since 1906. It’s one of the most antiquated and inexact refereeing methods in all sports, but first downs are still calculated using two poles attached by a chain.
