But perhaps most impressive, it was CU's first win over the Huskies in Boulder since 1990, snapping a nine-game losing streak in the series to a team that has made 10 straight bowl appearances and was the reigning Pac-12 champion. The win made a statement that the future is bright on Saturdays in Boulder and put the game into CU's countdown of top competitions from 2019-20.
It was the final home game for CU's seniors and NFL-bound junior Laviska Shenault Jr. He and senior quarterback Steven Montez both went out of Folsom Field with strong performances in their final game. Shenault finished with seven catches for 100 yards to go with 17 yards on the ground. Montez was 17-for-28 for 223 yards, no interceptions, and also rushed for 56 yards on six carries. The two also connected for a 39-yard touchdown that put CU in front 13-0 in the second quarter.
Several underclassmen showed a glimpse into the future as sophomore Alex Fontenot rushed for 105 yards, his third 100-yard game of the season. Freshman defensive back Mark Perry had three tackles for loss and two sacks.
At the end of the day, it was the defense that proved decisive for CU, holding Washington to just 238 yards of total offense with five sacks and a Nate Landman interception. The Huskies had allowed just 13 sacks all season heading into their 11th contest.
The Buffs went on to finish the season 5-7, but are optimistic about 2020 with new head coach Karl Dorrell arriving from the NFL.
