Herbstreit would be 'shocked' to see college football this fall - 247Sports

We continue to see the coronavirus threaten and change the sports world on a daily basis. But even the loss of the NCAA Tournament might not be the biggest change in sports if ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit is right.

Herbstreit appeared on ESPN radio Thursday and said he would be, “shocked,” if college football and the NFL even happen this fall.

“I’ll be shocked if we have NFL football this fall, if we have college football,” Herbstreit said, via a TMZ transcript. “I’ll be so surprised if that happens.”

The cancellation of sporting events really began on March 10, when the Ivy League announced that it would be canceling the Ivy League Basketball Tournaments. Days later, Power Five conferences and smaller conferences followed the Ivy League’s lead, before the NCAA then came out and said all of March Madness was over.

As it sits right now, no football games have been postponed or canceled, but spring practice has been impacted. On March 17, the SEC canceled spring football games. Yesterday, Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby told reporters on a teleconference that it would be, “very unlikely,” that the Big 12 spring football scrimmages take place.

The dominoes continue to fall and it is now getting dangerously close to impacting the season itself, according to Herbstreit.

“Just because from what I understand, people that I listen to, you’re 12 to 18 months from a [coronavirus] vaccine. I don’t know how you let these guys go into locker rooms and let stadiums be filled up and how you can play ball. I just don’t know how you can do it with the optics of it.” Herbstreit said, according to TMZ. “Next thing you know you got a locker room full of guys that are sick. And that’s on your watch? I wouldn’t want to have that.”

Ways to combat catching COVID-19 include self-quarantining from others, washing hands, avoiding hand to hand or physical contact with others. Coronavirus spreads between people in close contact with one another, typically within six feet, or through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Spread is still possible before people show symptoms, although that does not stand as the typical cause, according to the CDC.

Large, crowded areas should be avoided as movie theaters, work conferences and other traffic-heavy events are being shut down across the country per state jurisdictions at the urging of the CDC. Disneyland in California closed two weeks ago amid coronavirus concerns as well as Disney World and Universal Studios theme parks in Orlando, Florida, whose closures went into effect last week.

Coronavirus symptoms include fever, dry cough and shortness of breath. While flu symptoms are similar, they're often differentiated by high fever, exhaustion, chills, dry cough and body aches.

Isolation is encouraged if you feel you're coming down with flu-like symptoms that could be related to the coronavirus. Seek medical attention through your local emergency healthcare provider and stay away from others in close proximity.
