Could top 2021 football recruit Ga’Quincy McKinstry be state’s best senior basketball player as well? - AL.com

Pinson Valley’s Ga’Quincy McKinstry is widely considered the best 2021 football recruit in the state of Alabama.

Could he be the state’s best basketball player as a senior as well?

“He is a tremendous basketball player and athlete,” Indians’ coach Darrell Barber said. “He really only plays the sport three months out of the year right now. If he played 12 months, there is no doubt he would be the No. 1 basketball guy in the state. He has something you can’t teach. He’s special. Players like Ga’Quincy don’t come around often.”

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound McKinstry is a five-star football recruit with offers from Alabama, Auburn, LSU and Clemson among many others. He has played defensive back, wide receiver and kick returner for the Indians but is widely considered a college DB. He is ranked No. 1 in his class in the 247 composite rankings.

“I think he could play on either side of the ball from what I’ve seen,” first-year Pinson Valley coach and former Alabama defensive back Sam Shade said. “If I was coaching in college, I would recruit him knowing he could play both. He does a great job of locating the football and has really good ball skills. There are some receivers in college right now who don’t have the natural skills he has. I definitely think he could play on either side of the ball or both, though most people talk about him playing defense.”

Shade has yet to coach McKinstry, who had labrum surgery following basketball season. He is expected back this summer. As a junior playing for former coach Patrick Nix, McKinstry was a first-team AL.com All-Birmingham selection as an athlete.

He spent most of his time at receiver until later in the year when he played on both sides of the ball. He finished with 47 catches for 700 yards and 12 touchdowns, returned 12 kickoffs for 183 yards and intercepted a pass on defense.

“He’s really talented as far as overall athleticism,” Shade said. “He has a really good quick twitch and really good length at either receiver or corner. He competes and has a good motor. If the ball is in the air, there is a good chance he is going to come up with it wherever he is on the field.”

On the basketball court, McKinstry teamed with Kam Woods to lead Pinson Valley to a 28-4 record. He averaged 15 points, 5 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game and had 69 steals. He already has big goals for his senior year.

“I was talking to him a few weeks ago, and he showed me a checklist I didn’t know he had,” Barber said. “He didn’t end the football or basketball season the way he wanted this year, so I think he is really motivated for his senior year.

“If you think about it, his could be a guy who competes for Mr. Football and Mr. Basketball next year, competes to make the Alabama-Mississippi Football All-Star Game and the Basketball All-Star Game. He has that kind of talent.”

McKinstry also has talked about wanting to play both sports on the next level.

Can that be done with the demands of college today?

“It has to be the right situation,” Shade said. “Obviously, the staff on both sides would have to sign off with it. The big issue is you would lose some valuable off-season development time in either sport, but there have been guys who have done it and done it well. If it is something Ga’Quincy wants to do and puts his mind to it, he could probably do it.”

Barber said he has no doubt McKinstry could be successful at two sports in college.

He takes care of his body,” he said. “I really think he’s equally good at basketball as he is with football.”
