Spring football is less than two weeks ago for Georgia. The Bulldogs, once again considered a top 10 team in most preseason polls, will look to return to the SEC Championship and College Football Playoff. On Friday, USA Today named the biggest question facing each team in the Southeastern Conference. For Georgia, that question is how quickly can Jamie Newman step in at quarterback and learn the Bulldogs' offense, which will also have a new offensive coordinator at the helm.
The Wake Forest graduate transfer will be the starter in 2020, barring injury. Georgia needs to get him up to speed in an effort to maximize the senior's two major assets: his legs and a powerful arm that could mesh perfectly with offensive coordinator Todd Monken's downfield passing game. If he can get on board with the scheme, Newman will be in the mix for postseason hardware.
The arrival of quarterback Jamie Newman via graduate transfer from Wake Forest has brought with it high expectations for the new Georgia quarterback. As the likely replacement for Jake Fromm, who left early to enter the 2020 NFL Draft, Newman is being looked upon to bring a spark to an offense that was not up to par last season.
Newman led the Demon Deacons to an 8-5 record in 2019, his first and only season as the full-time starter. He completed 220 of 361 passes (60.9 percent) for 2,868 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. He also did quite a bit of damage on the ground, piling up 574 yards and six touchdowns on 180 carries and that includes sacks. He started all 13 games for Wake Forest in 2019.
One of the top players on the graduate transfer market after the 2019 season regardless of position, Newman chose Georgia over programs like Oregon, Miami, Maryland, and Washington to finish out his college career. He brings a lot of talent to the table. Per Pro Football Focus, Newman is the third-highest graded returning quarterback, behind only Justin Fields at Ohio State and Trevor Lawrence at Clemson. PFF also pegged Newman as being third amongst Power Five quarterbacks in deep ball percentage throw attempts (amongst quarterbacks that attempted at least 50 deep balls during the year). According to PFF, Newman 19.8 percent of his throws were deep balls, which is at least 20 yards past the line of scrimmage through the air. Fields had the highest percentage amongst Power Five quarterbacks at 21.9 percent and UNC’s Sam Howell was second at 21.3 percent. Newman compiled 1,159 of his passing yards on these deep balls with 13 touchdowns and just three interceptions. Newman was also effective when operating under pressure, completing 48.7 percent of his throws in those circumstances, according to PFF. Newman was highly effective when he got the ball out quick, completing 70.1 percent of his throws with 14 touchdowns and three interceptions when the attempt was under 2.5 seconds.
As a runner, Newman was used on a lot of designed running plays. He totaled 574 rushing yards and only 164 of those rushing yards were on scrambles. He totaled 27 forced missed tackles on the year and converted 40 first downs as a runner, which ranked as the tenth most amongst quarterbacks at the Power Five level.
