Syracuse, N.Y. — A couple of young defensive players will be working at new positions when Syracuse football opens spring practice Sunday.
Redshirt freshmen Ishmael Goulbourne and Steve Linton will practice at linebacker. The school noted the positional changes in its spring preview guide Saturday ahead of the team’s first practice.
Linton and Goulbourne were recruited as pass-rush specialists. Both arrived as undersized defensive linemen who could add weight to their frame over the course of their career.
Linton, at 6-foot-5, 226 pounds, could effectively be viewed as a hybrid, stand-up linebacker who provides the positional flexibility that would allow SU to change the look of its defensive front without substituting. That’s an important component of the 3-3-5 stack defense SU will run under new defensive coordinator Tony White.
Walk-on Abrahim Kenneh, a Nottingham graduate, will also practice at linebacker, bringing more roster balance to the defensive side of the ball.
