Plano hires Denton Braswell's Cody Moore as its next head football coach - The Dallas Morning News

For his first head coaching job, Cody Moore took over a program from scratch and led it to the postseason.

For his second job, Moore will be tasked with leading one of the most historic programs in the Dallas area back to prominence.

Moore, who led Denton Braswell to a 9-3 record in 2019, was approved and introduced during Tuesday’s Plano ISD board meeting as the next head football coach at seven-time state champion Plano. He replaces Jaydon McCullough, who spent 12 years as the Wildcats head coach before accepting a different position within the district.

“Coach Moore believes in student success in the classroom and on the playing field," said Plano ISD AD Jeff Smith. "Our Wildcat student athletes are in good hands."

“We are excited to welcome such a capable and collaborative leader to the Plano ISD family … Our Wildcat student athletes are in good hands,” Plano ISD athletic director Jeff Smith said in a statement.

Texas HS Football was first to report the news.

Plano has made it to nine UIL state championships, but hasn’t been back since 1995. It also hasn’t won a playoff game in 10 seasons. Moore will be looking to change that.

“I’m excited to embrace and learn about the history and the tradition that goes along with this job,” Moore said at Tuesday’s board meeting in front of a group of attendees that included some of his future players, “and I’m very excited to be a small part of it.”

Moore became Braswell’s first head coach back in 2015 after spending time at Royse City, Mesquite Horn and Rockwall as an offensive coordinator. Braswell didn’t start varsity play until 2016, so he coached the underclassmen in preparation for their first chance to play on varsity. Braswell went 0-10 in its first season and 5-15 over the next two. Then, this past season, Braswell went 9-3 and made the playoffs for the first time before losing a thrilling playoff game to Red Oak 35-30.

Moore is the first head football coaching hire made by Smith, who was hired to replace Gerald Brence on Feb. 4. Last year, for the first time in 30 years, all three Plano ISD football teams missed the postseason. In Moore, Smith hired someone with recent experience building a playoff-bound program.
