Week 2 ACC Football Roundup - Streaking The Lawn

Coming out of Week 1 with losses by UNC, Clemson, and Miami, the ACC was licking its wounds and being dragged by the football media from coast to coast.

Things were looking up in Week 2 after the early games.

And then the night games started.

Here’s how Week 2 went in the ACC.

Duke Blue Devils 45 - North Carolina A&T 17

After being down 7-0 entering the 2nd quarter, Cutcliffe and Gang got on the right track. Blue Devils did what they were supposed to against an FCS team.

Virginia Cavaliers 42 - Illinois Fighting Illini 14

Hoos dominated from start to finish in this one. Brennan Armstrong likely locked up another ACC QB of the week with 405 yards passing and 5 TDs. The Hoos still struggled to establish a running game, which could be problematic in weeks to come.

Wake Forest 41 - Norfolk State 16

Like Duke, Wake took care of their FCS opponent and were up 41-9 entering the 4th quarter and able to coast. QB Sam Hartman threw for 244 yards and only 1 TD, but three Deacs had rushing TDs.

Georgia Tech 45 - Kennesaw State 17

The Yellow Jackets bounced back after an embarrassing defeat last week to handle their FCS opponent. Their schedule is still impossible the rest of the way, but HC Geoff Collins will take bright spots wherever he can.

Pittsburgh 41 - Tennessee 34

The conference win of the week was Pittsburgh without a doubt. The Panthers outscored the Volunteers 27-10 in the 2nd quarter and matched TDs in the 2nd half to hold on for a good win. No, Tennessee probably isn’t great, but any ACC win over the SEC is good for us all.

Rutgers 17 - Syracuse 7

The Orange gave their fanbase hope last week traveling to Ohio and dominating the Bobcats. Syracuse won the yards battle, but an interception and 2 fumbles lost allowed Rutgers to come out on top.

Middle Tennessee State 14 - Virginia Tech 35

The Hokies picked up where they left off in Week 1 with an easy victory. More importantly they avoided the let down look ahead game as they travel to West Virginia next week with their ranked status on the line.

Boston College 45 - UMass 28

BC lead this game 14-0 at half. Both teams must have forgotten how to defense in the second half with 59 combined points being scored. The Eagles have Temple next week, so 3-0 is very likely.

South Carolina State 3 - Clemson 49

Well, they didn’t cover, but they didn’t give up a sack this week and actually scored, so good job Clemson. We’ll readily admit the ACC is pretty weak, but even Clemson’s schedule looks bad with no Miami, VT, or UNC.

Eastern Kentucky 3 - Louisville 30

Malik Cunningham totaled up 277 yards through the air, 1 TD pass, 29 yards on the ground, and 2 rushing touchdowns. He’s a dynamic player, but the Cardinals are really going to have to find some support for their QB.

Georgia State 17 - North Carolina 59

The Heels were “only” up 24-10 entering halftime. It was probably more comfortable than it looked, but they rolled off 21 unanswered in the 3rd quarter to fully take control. They’ll host the Hoos next week in a must-win ACC bout for the Heels.

.....and then the #goacc games.....

Appalachian State 23 - Miami 25

The Canes hung on by the skin of their teeth. Down 22-25 with 5 minutes left, they had to rely on a 43 yard FG to take the lead. Their defense forced the Mountaineers down to let the Canes escape.

North Carolina State 10 - Mississippi State 24

Nothing is more indicative of the Wolfpack’s effort than driving down 7-0 early in the game and running a jump pass with their running back. The pass was intercepted and NC State wouldn’t come close to tying the game the rest of the way.

....but the pièce de résistance goes to FSU.....

Jacksonville State 20 - Florida State 17

The Noles were outscored 13-3 in the 2nd half and 13-0 in the 4th quarter. Jacksonville State is an FCS team. Florida State has 5 stars on their roster. FSU looked like they were going to escape, but then.....

So much for that goodwill the Noles had after playing Notre Dame tough last week.
