The Syracuse Orange football team is feeling pretty good after opening the 2021 campaign with a solid 20 point victory on the road against the Ohio Bobcats. The Orange came out of the gates with a rush based attack, and the defense held it’s ground without yielding much to an Ohio team that could have continued the ‘Cuse woes versus rushing attacks.
With the win in the rearview, the Orange turn their attention to their next non-conference opponent, former Big East rival Rutgers. Even with the Labor Day holiday, head coach Dino Babers held his weekly press conference and unveiled this week’s depth chart ahead of the contest.
Syracuse’s Week 2 depth chart for Rutgers has been released. These are typically indicative of the previous game’s lineup.

The biggest story from today’s update was the absence of Chris Elmore on the depth chart after the fifth year senior sat out the opener against Ohio after traveling with the team. Typically, scholarship players with known injuries don’t travel so Elmore’s scratch seemed to indicate something last minute impacted the fullback/tight end. The head coach’s revelation that FERPA restrictions limited his comments raised some eyebrows as that is usually related to academic issues. Compounding all the uncertainty was this message from Elmore’s twitter account.
Outside of Elmore, the depth chart reflects what we saw on the field vs the Ohio Bobcats: Tommy DeVito is the clear starter at quarterback, Cooper Lutz and Jarveon Howard split backup duties at halfback, and the o-line/d-lines are solidified while we wait for full recoveries of Dakota Davis and McKinley Williams.
The Orange take on Rutgers this Saturday at 2 PM ET.
