Maine, which suffered a 34-24 season opening loss to Delaware, opens its season against two conference opponents for the first time since 1997 (Rhode Island/UMass). The Black Bears open the season with a pair of top-5 ranked opponents for the first time in history. A win for Maine would mark its highest ranked opponent it has defeated since knocking off No. 3 Weber State in the 2018 FCS Quarterfinal round.
- Maine and JMU will square off for the 19th time in history. The Black Bears are 5-13 all-time against the Dukes and 2-6 on the road in the series. JMU has won three-straight in the series, including a 28-10 victory in the latest meeting in 2017, held at Bridgeforth Stadium. Maine's last win in the series, and on the road in the series, came in 2011 when the Black Bears defeated JMU in overtime, 25-24. Maine's other lone win at JMU came in 2002, a 17-6 triumph. The first meeting in the series took place in 1995, a 21-17 JMU victory in Orono. Maine will look to snap JMU's current active 18-game win streak at Bridgeforth Stadium.
- In its season opener, the Black Bears fell behind 17-0 before rallying for 24-unanswered points to take a 24-17 lead at the break. However, Maine was unable to score in the second half, falling 34-24 to No. 5 Delaware. In his first game at Maine, Campbell transfer Ray Miller registered 12 tackles (2.5 for loss) while third-year quarterback Joe Fagnano threw for 305 yards and two scores. The total marked the third time in his career in which Fagnano surpassed 305 passing yards in a game.
- JMU, selected first in the CAA Preseason Coaches Poll, is coming off a 7-1 campaign in the spring which saw it advance to the FCS Semifinals before falling to eventual champions, Sam Houston. The Dukes return much of their nucleus from the spring, including CAA Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Percy Agyei-Obese (RB) and CAA Preseason Defensive Player of the Year Mike Greene (DL). In its opener, JMU blasted Morehead State, 68-10, limiting the Eagles to -57 rush yards while tallying a school-record 51 points in the second half. Cole Johnson threw for five touchdowns to earn CAA Offensive Player of the Week honors. Two coaches from Maine's 2018 Final Four staff are with JMU, defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman and defensive backs (CB) coach Matt Birkett.
- The Black Bears welcome back 20 starters from the spring campaign; 10 on offense, eight on defense, and two on special teams. Offensively, Maine welcomes back each of its top four rushers - led by second year back Freddie Brock (29 carries, 165 yards, one touchdown) and Elijah Barnwell (38, 125) - and all 10 of its receivers who registered at least one reception in the spring. Third-year starter and All-CAA Second Team selection Joe Fagnano returns under center after ranking second in the CAA with 198.8 passing yards per game during the abbreviated spring season. On defense, Maine returns three of its top four returning tacklers in defensive lineman Jamehl Wiley (27) and Adrian Otero (25) while welcoming in grad transfer Ray Miller (LB) who posted a game-high 12 stops against Delaware.
