Longhorn football commits in action, Sept. 9-10 - Burnt Orange Nation

Only 12 of the Texas Longhorns’ 20 commits in the 2022 recruiting class had games last week, and the teams of those 12 future Longhorns went 9-3. Covid-19 and Hurricane Ida contributed to the cancellation of three games on last week’s schedule, one commit had an open date, and another sat out with an injury that prevented him from making his 2021 season debut until this week.

The Longhorns’ two commits from Arizona had their first game of the season last week, while a New Orleans area recruit is still waiting for his team to be able to take the field.

Recent high school football seasons have always featured at least a game or two where Longhorn commits played against each other, and this week will see the first instance of that in 2021. Below is this week’s schedule for each commit in the #22EFFECT class, and the game start times are written according to Central Time. As always, anyone interested in attending one of the games listed would be well advised to check local schedules or the social media accounts of the schools involved to make sure the game hasn’t been canceled or rescheduled due to Covid issues.

2022 QB Maalik Murphy — Gardena (California) Junipero Serra

Friday, September 10 at 9:00, at Downey (California) Warren

Note: Murphy completed 17 of 28 passes for 335 yards, 2 TDs and 2 INTs last Saturday in a neutral site loss to highly-ranked Utah 6A team American Fork, the score of which was variously reported as 56-21 or 56-27. The game was played in San Diego as part of a weekend series of contests dubbed the Honor Bowl. Serra led at one point in the first half, but trailed 28-21 at halftime and American Fork ran away with the game in the second half. Both of Murphy’s interceptions were returned for touchdowns.

Serra is now 1-2, and its next opponent, Downey, has won its first three games and outscored its 2021 opponents 145-14.

2022 RB Jamarion Miller — Tyler Legacy

Friday, September 10 at 7:00, vs. Longview

Note: Miller had 14 carries for 165 yards and 2 TDs in a 62-55 win last week over cross-town rival Tyler High. He also had a 71-yard kickoff return TD, on which he took advantage of some terrible tackling and bad use of angles and leverage on the part of Tyler’s kickoff coverage team (see: the first play of the highlights below). He also lost a fumble in the game.

This week Legacy will face another traditional east Texas power, Longview, which is currently ranked as the #7 team in Class 5A Division I.

2022 WR Armani Winfield — Lewisville

Friday, September 10 at 7:00, vs. Arlington Lamar

Note: Winfield has not played in Lewisville’s first two games due to a recent concussion, but reportedly is expected to play on Friday. Lewisville is 2-0 so far and on Friday will host 0-2 Arlington Lamar, which is looking for its first win under new head coach Billy Skinner, a Lamar alum who is only the fourth head football coach the school has had in its 50-year history.

2022 OL Cole Hutson — Frisco

Friday, September 10 at 7:00, vs. Lake Dallas

Note: Frisco gained 381 yards on the ground and averaged better than 11 yards per carry in a 43-30 non-district win over Frisco Reedy last week. Hutson contributed greatly to that effort and got some defensive snaps and recorded a tackle near the goal line. With his play on the offensive line, Hutson will hopefully be able to get a nice NIL deal with the pancake eatery of his choice within a few years.

The Raccoons will have their first game of district play on Friday night when they host Lake Dallas.

2022 OL Connor Robertson — Austin Westlake

Friday, September 10 at 7:30, vs. Mansfield Summit (at Belton)

Note: Robertson and the Westlake offense gained 492 total yards in a 34-14 win last week over Euless Trinity, which went into the contest ranked #6 in Class 6A. Robertson was lining up at right tackle earlier this season, but his highlights in the Trinity game show him playing left guard.

The Westlake Chaparrals remain the top-ranked team in Class 6A and will travel to Belton on Friday for a neutral site game against Mansfield Summit, which is 1-1 this season with its loss coming in overtime by a 20-14 score to Jenks, the third-ranked team in Oklahoma’s Class 6A Division I. The Westlake-Summit game will be played at Crusader Stadium on the campus of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.

2022 DL Aaron Bryant — Southaven (Mississippi)

Friday, September 10 at Oxford (Mississippi) Lafayette

Note: Southaven fell to 1-1 last week with a 10-6 loss to Columbus. Bryant’s highlights from the game show him playing DE in what mostly appears to be a 3-3-5 defensive alignment.

2022 DL Kristopher Ross — Galena Park North Shore

Friday, September 10 at 7:00, at Spring Westfield

Note: 4th-ranked North Shore dominated Klein Collins last week in a 34-7 win, holding Collins to around 130 yards of offense. The Mustangs (currently ranked 4th in the state by Texas Football, and 9th in the nation by USA Today) should get a stiffer challenge this week when they travel to play Westfield, Class 6A’s 18th-ranked team.

2022 DL Zac Swanson — Phoenix (Arizona) Brophy Prep

Friday, September 10 at 9:00, at Phoenix (Arizona) Mountain Pointe

Note: Swanson was credited with 4 total tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 0.5 sacks, and a forced fumble last week in a 49-0 win for Brophy Prep over Phoenix St. Mary’s. Brophy Prep will face the 1-0 Mountain Pointe Pride (as in pride of lions) on Friday night.

2022 DE J’Mond Tapp — Donaldsonville (Louisiana) Ascension Catholic

No game

Note: Ascension Catholic did not have a game last week due to the aftermath of Hurricane Ida. Its originally scheduled game for this week versus Metairie Park Country Day has been canceled, and it seems Tapp’s team won’t be playing this week. Ascension Catholic’s MaxPreps page suggests that it has a game on Friday against ranked Class 2A school Dunham, but according to Crescent City Sports, Dunham (whose original game for this week was canceled) will play at Mandeville, and no new game has been scheduled for Ascension Catholic.

2022 DE/LB Derrick Brown — Texarkana Texas

Thursday, September 9 at 7:30, at Forney

Note: Texarkana Texas’s originally scheduled game for last week versus Texarkana Arkansas was canceled a week before it would have been played, though the team’s MaxPreps page curiously reports that Texas beat Arkansas by the impossible score of 21-0 in overtime.

Tonight, the Tigers will travel 170 miles west for a non-district game at Forney. They will have an open date next week before beginning district play in two weeks.

2022 LB Eoghan Kerry — Santa Ana (California) Mater Dei

Friday, September 10 at 9:30, at Henderson (Nevada) Liberty

Note: After an off week, Mater Dei, the top-ranked team in USA Today’s Super 25 rankings this week, will travel to face Nevada powerhouse Liberty. Eoghan Kerry will get to face off against future Longhorn teammate Anthony Jones in the 2021 season’s first game involving UT commits on opposite sidelines.

2022 DB Bryan Allen — Aledo

Friday, September 10 at 7:00, vs. Fort Worth Arlington Heights

Note: Aledo beat Frisco Lone Star 45-35 last week in a battle of state-ranked 5A teams. The Bearcats remain the top-ranked team in 5A Division II and will close out their non-district schedule on Friday against Arlington Heights. When those two teams last met in 2013, Aledo won 84-7, and it wasn’t even Aledo’s highest-scoring game of that season. The 2013 Bearcats went undefeated and outscored their opponents by an average margin of 55 points! Aledo may not put a Randy Moss jersey number’s worth of points on the board Friday, but it should be able to essentially name its score.

2022 DB Austin Jordan — Denton Ryan

Friday, September 10 at 7:00, vs. Frisco Reedy

Note: Ryan fell 14-7 in overtime last week against cross-town rival Denton Guyer, which moved up to the #7 ranking in Class 6A this week. Austin Jordan caught 4 passes for 39 yards and scored Ryan’s only touchdown in the game. The loss was Ryan’s first regular season defeat since 2014, when Guyer blew out the Raiders 52-7 in the final game of that campaign.

Despite the loss, Ryan retained the top spot in the 5A Division I state rankings, and it will look to get back to its accustomed regular season dominance when it hosts Frisco Reedy on Friday.

2022 DB Ronald Lewis — New Orleans (Louisiana) Warren Easton

No game

Note: Due to Hurricane Ida, Lewis and his Warren Easton teammates have yet to play their first game of 2021, and they have an open date on this week’s schedule. The Eagles are scheduled to travel to Baton Rouge next week to play Scotlandville.

2022 ATH Anthony Jones — Las Vegas (Nevada) Liberty

Friday, September 10 at 9:30, vs. Santa Ana (California) Mater Dei

Note: Liberty got a decisive 34-6 win over Las Vegas Foothill last week. Anthony Jones was credited with 2 tackles on defense and had a 30-yard catch on his only offensive touch, though on MaxPreps it was credited as a carry and not a reception.

After beating their first three opponents by a combined score of 116-20, the Liberty Patriots will get their toughest test of at least the regular season on Friday when they host national #1 Mater Dei, the team of Jones’s fellow UT commit Eoghan Kerry.

2022 K Will Stone — Austin Regents School

Friday, September 10 at 7:00, vs. Bellaire Episcopal

Note: In what was likely their first-ever game against a Class 5A public school team, the Austin Regents Knights blew away Pflugerville Connally last week, 55-0. Will Stone kicks left-footed, and his highlights from the Connally game show him nailing field goals of 54 and 48 yards.

Regents is Texas Football’s top-ranked private school team, and on Friday it will host Bellaire Episcopal, a team that lost 34-14 two weeks ago to the third-ranked private school team, Dallas Parish Episcopal.

2022 LS Lance St. Louis — Gilbert (Arizona) Williams Field

Friday, September 10 at 9:00, at Avondale (Arizona) La Joya Community

Note: Williams Field won its first game of the season last week, beating Higley 49-14. Presumably this gave Lance St. Louis several opportunities to snap for PAT attempts.

For its second game of 2021, Williams Field will travel some 43 miles west to the southwest Phoenix suburb Avondale, where they will face the Fighting Lobos of La Joya Community High School.

Other commits not playing this season

2022 RB Jaydon Blue (Klein Cain)

Cain has opted out of playing in the 2021 season. Unless there is a change with his status I will not be posting updates on Klein Cain’s season.

2022 DL Jaray Bledsoe (Marlin)

After previously attending Bremond High School, Bledsoe transferred in the summer of 2021 to Marlin High School, which is 17 miles away. He was ruled ineligible to play in the 2021 season, and the UIL denied his eligibility appeal in late August. I won’t post updates on Marlin’s season unless something changes with Bledsoe’s eligibility status.

2022 LB Trevell Johnson (Arlington Martin)

After dealing with a hip issue for several months, Johnson briefly played in week one before electing to have a surgery that will cause him to miss the rest of his senior season.
