Texas Tech football: Red Raiders land 4-star ATH Maurion Horn - Wreck 'em Red

Landing 4-star talent has not been easy for the Texas Tech football program in recent years.  But on Saturday, that’s exactly what Matt Wells and his coaching staff managed to do when 4-star athlete Maurion Horn gave his verbal pledge to the Red Raiders.

The 5-foot-11, 175-pound product of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma is listed by 247Sports as the No. 11 athlete in the nation and the No. 210 player regardless of position.  He’s easily the highest-rated member of Tech’s 2022 recruiting class.

Picking Tech over offers from the likes of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Baylor, Arkansas, Iowa State, Kansas, Michigan State, Nebraska, Oregon, Texas, and USC, Horn’s commitment has boosted the Red Raiders’ class ranking to No. 8 in the conference and No. 61 nationally.

While those rankings are nothing to write home about, they are an improvement given that when June began, Tech was last in the Big 12 as Wells and his staff had yet to land any verbal commitments in the current recruiting cycle.

Horn has played both RB and WR in high school.  However, he appears to be emerging as one of the best RBs in the country as his prep career progresses.

This past season, he posted 2,079 yards and nine touchdowns on 123 attempts.  Additionally,  he hauled in 16 passes for 235 yards and three touchdowns (according to 247Sports).

Saturday’s development gives Tech its second highly productive RB in the class of 2022.  Just a week ago, Bryson Donnell from Tyler, Texas also committed to the Red Raiders.

It’s also the second-straight year that Tech has landed a 4-star running back.  In the class of 2021, Tech added Cam’Ron Valdez, who was rated a 4-star prospect by Rivals.com.

But picking up 4-star commitments has been fairly rare for Tech in recent years.  If you go by 247Sports’ rankings, Tech added only one in the 2021 class, QB Behren Morton.  What’s more, in the last five recruiting classes, the program has signed only five players of such caliber.  And to find the last time that Tech signed more than one 4-star player in one recruiting class, you have to go back to the 2016 class when WRs Derrick Willies and T.J. Vasher both signed with the Red Raiders.

It’s been a hot run of luck for Wells and Co. on the recruiting trail.  After not having any players committed for 2022 when June began, Tech has now landed six commitments, five of which came in June.

Now, July is off to a fantastic start as the Red Raiders have landed one of the 250 best players in the nation.  That’s the type of summer that we were hoping to see from the Red Raiders.
