In case you missed it during your evening commute yesterday, Alabama picked up a commitment from Kobe Prentice, a 4.38-speed wide receiver out of Calera.
Speed is ALWAYS good to have on the team.
I’m going to link a piece surrounding the Oklahoma/Texas drama, but after that I’m dropping the subject. There’s enough speculation and talk running rampant out there that, honestly, doesn’t really matter until we get a statement from Greg Sankey.
In any case, I can’t pass up the opportunity to make fun of Bob Stoops:
A lot has happened since 2013.
If you remember, that’s when Bob Stoops made national headlines for calling SEC dominance “propaganda.”
Now, the former Oklahoma coach says the Sooners are “taking control of its own destiny” in an opinion piece he penned for “The Daily Oklahoman.”
“I believe this is a good and necessary move for the future of our school and football program,” Stoops wrote.
“By joining the SEC, we ensure the state’s flagship university will be represented nationally while protecting our rich football history for many years to come. To move forward in any other manner would be to the detriment of OU and the state of Oklahoma.”
The internet ALWAYS remembers, Bob.
I also thoroughly enjoyed him going on to say that it wouldn’t be possible to bring Oklahoma State along, mentioning that Oklahoma was the “flagship” program and after this, ALL Oklahomans would have to submit to the Sooners (paraphrased... more or less...).
Of course, were I in the same position, I’d be more than happy to leave Auburn behind.
“First of all, Nick Saban is smarter than any 10 of us in this room combined. There’s no way that was a throw-in,” Shaw said. “It’s obvious to me Nick wanted to plant that and make sure people knew that. It’s a great way to recruit people to come to you, which the guy hasn’t started a college football game and he’s already signed a whole bunch of deals to make money.
“To me, I don’t think that’s what this whole thing is supposed to be about. I don’t believe that is true market value. I think that’s Alabama value. But that’s not market value for an individual, which is what this is supposed to be about.
Man, David Shaw is doing his best to voice complaints about the way the NIL stuff is going, but really he’s just giving Alabama free recruiting. He’s just straight up saying that playing for Alabama is more valuable than playing at any other school in the country.
I’m sure Nick Saban will take that compliment, as well as the nearest 5-star recruit.
Crimson Tide defensive lineman Evan Neal and defensive lineman Phidarian Mathis were named to the Outland Trophy watch list....
Alabama led all schools with six players on the Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list in defensive linemen DJ Dale and Phidarian Mathis, linebackers Will Anderson Jr. and Christian Harris, cornerback Josh Jobe and safety Malachi Moore.
The Nagurski and Outland Trophies have released their preseason watch lists, and Alabama landed quite a few in the lists. Evan Neal was a shoe-in and likely the overall favorite to win the Outland going into the season, but the inclusion of Phil Mathis is a bit of a surprise. The senior has been a steady contributor for years and really started playing well at the end of last season, but he’s never been a starter either... and isn’t necessarily even a starter for 2021 with LaBryan Ray, Byron Young, Justin Eboigbe, and D.J. Dale all returning as starters along the defensive line.
I also really appreciate the love for Josh Jobe as a Nagurski guy. He was criminally underrated playing opposite of Pat Surtain last season.
In NFL news, roster cut-down season is getting near, and Saivion Smith is already on the outs and looking for another new team:
With Seattle players scheduled to report for training camp on Tuesday, former Alabama cornerback Saivion Smith lost his place on the Seahawks’ roster on Monday.
Seattle released Smith to create a spot on the roster for newly signed wide receiver Darece Roberson, the Seahawks announced on Monday.
On the other hand, Jonathan Allen just got PAID:
The Washington Football Team did not let defensive tackle Jonathan Allen even approach NFL free agency by agreeing to a four-year, $72 million contract extension with the former Alabama All-American.
Allen’s agency, Team IFA, announced the deal on Monday afternoon, indicating the new contract came with a $30 million signing bonus, and Allen tweeted: “Washington for life!!”
Only Aaron Donald of the Los Angeles Rams has received a larger signing bonus among NFL defensive-interior players at $40 million.
Despite having to overcome some injuries, Allen has been absolutely stellar for Washington in his career, even if the national media has mostly ignored it for some reason. And now he’s being paid as the 4th-best interior lineman in the NFL.
Former Alabama All-American Landon Dickerson signed his first NFL contract on Monday, the Philadelphia Eagles announced.
Dickerson became the last of the 21 players with Alabama football roots selected in the 2021 NFL Draft to sign his rookie deal.
“I’ve signed now, and I can’t wait to get to work,” Dickerson said in a message to Eagles fans.
Dickerson signed a four-year contract worth about $8.66 million, including a signing bonus of around $3.66 million.
Finally, Landon Dickerson has officially signed with the Philadelphia Eagles to become a millionaire himself.
