BREAKING: Northwestern to open 2022 football season in Ireland against Nebraska - Inside NU

Northwestern football will open its 2022 season against Nebraska on August 27, 2022, at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland, according to a press release.

The game will be played as a part of the Aer Lingus College Football Classic and will take place during “Week Zero” of the college football season. It will be Northwestern’s first ever game played outside of the United States.

Both teams will be competing for the Keough-Naughton trophy, named after Don Keough and Martin Naughton. The ‘Cats will be the designated home team at Aviva Stadium.

On a broader scale, this will be the first college football game played in Ireland since 2016, when Georgia Tech defeated Boston College 17-14. Notre Dame and Navy were scheduled to play in Dublin in 2020, as were Nebraska and Illinois in 2021, but both of those games were moved due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As for tickets, fans can put down a $250 package deposit to secure a ticket to the game at CollegeFootballIreland.com. Tickets are on a first-come-first-serve basis. For reference, Aviva Stadium seats 51,700 people.

Both Northwestern and Nebraska will arrive in Dublin a few days prior to the game to get acclimated to the time difference and explore the city, according to the press release. There is no word yet on a kickoff time, but it’s fair to assume we in the States might have to be up pretty early for this one.
