The Washington Football Team has signed free agent linebacker David Mayo, the team announced last week. Full terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Mayo, the former Scappoose High School star, spent the past two seasons with the New York Giants. Mayo, 27, was released by the Giants March 3, one year into the three-year, $8.4 million contract he signed in 2020.
Slowed by a torn meniscus in his knee that forced him to miss the first five games of the season, Mayo struggled upon his return after he was shifted to outside linebacker instead of his normal inside linebacker spot. Playing mostly as a reserve after the Giants opted for younger players such as Tae Crowder and Cam Brown, Mayo posted just 29 total tackles during the 2020 season.
Mayo signed with the Giants just days after he was cut by the San Francisco 49ers just before the 2019 regular season began. Originally expected to play mostly on special teams, Mayo was inserted into the starting lineup after Ryan Connelly was injured.
He posted a career-high 82 tackles, along with two sacks in 13 games during the 2019 season. The Giants rewarded Mayo’s career year by signing him to a three-year, $8.4 million contract extension in 2020.
Mayo will reunite with Washington coach Ron Rivera. Mayo played under Rivera during his first four seasons (2014-18) with the Carolina Panthers.
