Meet the 2020 Michigan high school football all-state team for Divisions 7-8 - MLive.com

It’s been a long and wild Michigan high school football season and it’s not done yet.

The COVID-19 pandemic threw quite a few wrenches into the year, but teams were still able to get most of the season in and players were able to showcase their skills.

Even though the season is scheduled to restart at the beginning of the new year, it’s time to unveil the Associated Press all-state team for Divisions 7 and 8.

The all-state list includes Player of the Year, Coach of the Year, first team, second team and honorable mention selections voted on by a panel of 11 media members from across the state. A unanimous selection means that all 11 voters picked an athlete for the first team.

Here is the 2020 AP all-state football team for Divisions 7-8:

Brady Hessbrook, Ithaca, Sr.

There aren’t many quarterbacks in the state who have had a more storied career than Ithaca’s Brady Hessbrook.

A 4-year starter, Hessbrook led the Yellowjackets to four-straight playoff appearances and a 9-0 record this season with a spot in the Division 7 regional final against Cass City.

The 6-foot-1, 185-pound standout completed 102-of-150 passes for 1,667 yards passing with 27 touchdowns to only three interceptions.

Hessbrook also showcased his skills as a dual threat signal caller as he rushed for 363 yards and found the end zone eight times.

During his four years under center for Ithaca, Hessbrook has a record of 36-5 with four conference championships. He is committed to Wayne State.

Alex Thole, Schoolcraft, Sr.

The Grand Valley State commit completed 95-of-152 passes for 1,850 yards with 25 TDs and eight interceptions. Thole is a team captain for Schoolcraft and led the Eagles to an 8-1 record and an appearance against Jackson Lumen Christi for the Division 7 regional title. Thole passed for more 6,800 yards and 80 TDs in his career.

RUNNING BACKS

Sheldon Huff, Johannesburg-Lewiston, Sr.

Huff rushed for more than 100 yards in seven of Lewiston’s victories this season. The senior ran for 1,212 yards and 15 TDs in eight games, averaging 10.2 yards a carry. Huff was named NMFL-Legacy Division Most Valuable Player. On defense he added 115 tackles, two interceptions, one sack, one fumble recovery and a blocked kick.

Jackson Zeiter, Madison Heights Bishop Foley, So.

The underclassman rushed for 1,010 yards and 10 touchdowns, and caught 36 passes for 643 yards and 8 TDs. He also had 3 interceptions and returned two for scores. Zeiter was also named All-Catholic and All-Region.

Cam Valliere, Breckenridge, Sr.

Cam Valliere has become one of Breckenridge's top football players after transferring from Bay City John Glenn during his freshman year.

Valliere rushed for 1,199 yards on 115 carries and 20 touchdowns with an average of 10.4 yards per carry. The senior caught receptions for 171 yards. He was also named first-team all-conference and all-region.

The dynamic underclassman rushed for 1,305 yards and scored 10 touchdowns to help SMCC to a 6-3 record.

Will Alexander, Sand Creek, Sr.

Alexander carried the ball 157 times for 1,655 yards and 22 touchdowns. He also passed for 625 yards and eight scores. The veteran was named first-team all-league, all-region, all-county and first-team Michigan High School Football Coaches Association all-state.

Josh Sherwood, Grass Lake, Sr.

Sherwood caught 38 passes for 661 yards and six touchdowns. On defense, he added 32 tackles, six pass break-ups, one interception and one fumble recovery.

Adam Kidder, Madison Heights Bishop Foley, So.

Kidder was named all-region and all-league after hauling in 24 catches for 727 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also had 92 tackles, 19 tackles for loss, 5 sacks and 2 INTs on defense.

Alex Armenio, Royal Oak Shrine, Sr.

The senior caught 63 passes for 942 yards and six TDs. He also had two rushing scores. He also played defensive end and had 50 tackles, 5 TFL and 5 Sacks and was named all-league and all-region.

Zach Poff, Ithaca, Sr.

The Dayton commit was one of Hessbrook’s top targets. Poff had 28 receptions, 579 yards and six touchdowns and carried the ball 23 times for 293 yards and five TDs. He was also all-conference and all-region.

Damaso Lebron, Homer, Sr.

The senior pulled in 32 passes for 616 yards and 10 touchdowns. Lebron added 20 tackles and four interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown as a defensive back.

LINEMAN

Cam Orr, New Lothrop, Sr.

Orr was named the Flint-area Defensive Player of the Year as the top defensive player on a New Lothrop team that has allowed just 64 points this season.

The 6-foot-3, 220-pounder recorded 41 tackles with 14 for loss, nine sacks with four forced fumbles.

Casey Donohue, Traverse City St. Francis, Sr.

Donohue served as TCSF’s center and long snapper and helped pave the way for an offense that racked up 2,154 yards on the ground. The Gladiators also passed for 929 yards.

As a defensive lineman, the senior had 40 tackles with four for loss, an interception, one force fumble and a fumble recovery.

Cole Pape, Delton Kellogg, Sr.

Pape is a four-year starter and was honorable mention all-state last season. Pape played both offensive tackle and tight end for Dalton with 47 pancake blocks.

Nathan Lundin, West Iron County, Sr.

Lundin recorded 21 tackles with two sacks, one tackle for loss and a fumble recovery. He was also first-team all-conference and was named West PAC Iron Division Offensive Player of the Year as a lineman.

Noah Bauman, Ottawa Lake-Whiteford, Jr.

Bauman was named first-team once again after earning the honor in 2019 as well. He was selected first-team MHSFCA all-region and was all-league and all-county.

Tommy Runyan, Johannesburg-Lewiston, Sr.

Runyan was a leader for the Cardinals as the team’s lone returning starter up front on offense. Was the ancho of an offense that rushed for 3,189 yards and averaged 48.6 points per game.

On defense, Runyan tallied 61 tackles with three for loss, two sacks, two fumble recoveries and a blocked kick. He was also named first-team MHSFCA all-state.

Darron Chinery, Saginaw Nouvel, Sr.

Chinery was a three-year starter for Nouvel on both side of the ball. He had 63 tackles, 17 tackles for loss and 13 sacks. As an offensive lineman, Chinery didn’t allow a sack in 2020.

Derrick Harmon, Detroit Loyola, Sr.

The 6-foot-4, 330-pound defensive tackle was a force up front and recorded 20 tackles for loss and 14 sacks. The Michigan State signee also started at offensive tackle.

LINEBACKERS

Luke Snyder, Charlevoix, Sr.

Snyder earned conference Player of the Year honors and helped the Rayders to a 6-0 regular season record. He was also named the Petoskey News-Review Player of the Year and finishing with 102 tackles, one sack and eight pass breakups.

Ethan Eyler, Petersburg-Summerfield, Sr.

Eyler was a tackling machine with school record 143 tackles, with two sacks one interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. He also earned first-team MSFCA all-region honors and was named all-county.

Nicholas Trumble, Addison, Jr.

The junior was Addison’s top defensive talent as he piled up 71 tackles with 24 tackles for loss, four sacks, two pass breakups and a fumble recovery.

Garrett Fitzgerald, Breckenridge, Sr.

The 6-foot, 220-pound linebacker recorded 93 tackles, 15 tackles for loss and one force fumble. He was also named first-team all-conference.

DEFENSIVE BACKS

LaGrow helped Hemlock to an 8-1 record and a top-10 ranking this season. He was a ballhawk with seven interceptions and recorded 21 tackles with three pass deflections.

Connor DeVries, Lawton, Sr.

DeVries repeated as an all-state selection and hauling in six interceptions and 60 tackles. He was a three-time all-conference selection and helped Lawton finish 7-2.

Dilon Denison, Reading, Sr.

Denison was a key defensive player for a Reading team that finished the year at 7-2. He caught three interceptions and returned a punt for a touchdown.

Will Muron, New Lothrop, Sr.

Not many passes got through against Muron this season. He recorded 17 pass breakups with two interceptions to go along with 28 tackles and three tackles for loss.

SPECIALIST

Jus’tyz Tuggle, Detroit Central, Sr.

Tuggle did it all for Detroit Central. He finished the year with 2,612 all-purpose yards.

He rushed for 634 yards and four touchdowns, caught 22 passes for 731 yards and seven scores, threw for 484 yards and three TDs, whil returning two kickoffs for scores.

Tuggle also had three interceptions and broke up 11 passes.

KICKER

Connor Butcher, Auburn Hills Oakland Christian, Sr.

Butcher made seven field goals with three over 40 yards. He connected on 24-of-26 extra point attempts and had 15 touchbacks on kickoffs. He was named all-conference as well.

PUNTER

Carson Voss, Dansville, Sr.

Voss averaged 42 yards per punt and had a net average of 39 yards. He landed seven punts inside the 20 and had a long of 61 yards.

COACH

Scott Cuthrell, Cass City

Cuthrell was honorable mention Coach of the Year last season but earned the first-team honor this year after leading Cass City to a 9-0 record and a spot in the regional title game.

The Red Hawks are 20-2 in the last two seasons and will be playing for a second-consecutive regional championship when they face Ithaca on Jan. 2.
