Michigan’s high school state tournament reached the district final round Friday night, which meant a big trophy and a trip to the regionals were on the line.

Reporters and photographers headed to gridirons across MLive’s nine regions. Check out what they discovered below.

Chelsea vs. Brother Rice district final football

Chelsea senior Joe Taylor said the Bulldogs sent a message in his team’s 23-0 victory over Brother Rice.

“It definitely sends a message to the rest of the state,” Taylor said. “We can beat anyone. One paper, we’re probably one of the smaller teams, but in reality, we’re going to play physical for 48 minutes.”

Romeo’s defense had a suffocating performance in a 45-27 victory over previously unbeaten Rochester Hills Stoney Creek. The Bulldogs returned a pair of fumbles for touchdowns on consecutive plays. Jared Purcell has more highlights here.

Davison football defeats Grand Blanc 48-19 to clinch 2020 Division 1 district title

Davison defeated Grand Blanc by 25 points when the two times squared off earlier this season. The rematch wasn’t much different. Davison cruised to a 48-19 victory to win a Division 1 district title. Click here to check out Brendan Savage’s full report.

Michigan Center was down by one point with 2:50 left in regulation against Jonesville, but the goods news for the Cardinals is that they play their best football when the chips are down. Josh VanDyke explains here how the Cardinals rallied for a 28-222 victory, giving the program its first district championship.

Jackson Lumen Christ’s Herb Brogan is the third winningest football coach in MHSAA history, and he added one more victory to his total in a 22-6 win against Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central. Read more here.

The Addison Panthers saw their season end on the final play of the game Friday night, as Sand Creek quarterback Will Alexander dove into the endzone as time expired to give the Aggies a wild 36-32 road win in the Division 8 district championship game at Addison High School. Portage Northern at East Lansing football

When East Lansing marched down the field and capped its first drive with a 13-yard touchdown catch from Andrel Anthony, it looked like the University of Michigan wide receiver commit was on his way to a big district title game Friday against Portage Northern.

As it turned out, the person who delivered that pass -- East Lansing junior quarterback Ambrose Wilson -- was the one who carried the Trojans to a 42-14 win over Huskies to secure East Lansing’s first district championship since 2017.

In a matchup of No. 1 vs. No. 2 in the Division 6 district football finals, it was No. 5 who owned the night. Montague senior Drew Collins stole the show for the top-ranked, visiting Wildcats in their 36-7 victory over second-ranked Muskegon Catholic Central Friday at Kehren Stadium.

Hemlock football hosts Cass City in Division 7 district championship game

Cass City only threw one pass in its 36-22 win against Hemlock. When a team has a running game like Cass City’s, though, there’s really no need to throw. The Red Hawks rolled up 361 yards rushing to capture a Division 7 district title. Hugh Bernreuter has more here.

FRIDAY’S HEROES

Drew Collins sparked Montague to a 36-7 win over Muskegon Catholic Central in a Division 6 battle of teams ranked Nos. 1 and 2 (Montague 1, MCC 2). The Wildcats' senior quarterback had a hand in all five touchdowns. He ran 19 times for 124 yards and three scores (runs of 4, 1 and 27 yards). He was 17-of-25 passing for 186 yards with two touchdowns and no picks. On defense, he had one interception and three tackles.

Davison senior running back Te’Avion Warren rushed 12 times for 189 yards, which is an average of 15.8 yards per carry – while running for one touchdown. He also had four tackles on defense and returned an interception for another touchdown in a 48-19 win over Grand Blanc.

Millington’s Brendyn Callahan ran 19 times for 216 yards in a 40-34 Division 6 loss to Montrose. Callahan ran for three touchdowns covering 51, 65 and 63 yards.

Cole Lindow got the Frankenmuth rout going with the game’s first two touchdowns, a 12-yarder and a 4-yarder, as Frankenmuth earned a running-clock, 56-14 win over Corunna in a Division 5 district final. Lindow carried the ball just nine times, but still gained 106 yards for the 9-0 Eagles.

Cass City’s Jordan Mester was the main cog in his team’s run game, which totaled 361 yards in a 36-22 Division 7 win Friday over Hemlock. Mester ran 20 times for 183 yards, scoring on touchdown runs of 21, 15 and 13 yards. Cass City, 9-0, will play at 9-0 Ithaca in a quarterfinal game.

Cole Lindow, Frankenmuth

East Grand Rapids running back Nate Milanowski rushed for 202 yards and accounted for six touchdowns in the Pioneers' 41-17 win over Middleville. Milanowski ran for four touchdowns, returned a kickoff 98 yards for a score and threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Quinn VanZee.

Larry Robinson had a 95-yard touchdown run for Saline in its 14-8 win over Holt.

Romeo forced five turnovers in a 45-27 win over Stoney Creek. Defensive standouts included Matthew Ploetz, who had an interception and returned a fumble 15 yards for a touchdown. Michael Heldman forced two fumbles, and Anthony Lomankowski had a 55-yard fumble return for a touchdown.

Brady Rose of Mona Shores led the Sailors to a 43-35 win over Caledonia. Rose rushed 13 times for 115 yards and scored on runs of 70 and 13 yards. He was 7-of-10 passing for 138 yards with picks and no picks, and he posted a game-high 16 tackles. Rose scored the game-winning touchdown on a 13-yard run with 1:22 left, and for good measure, tacked on the two-point conversion run on a bad PAT snap.

Kearsley senior quarterback Braylon Silvas completed 17-of-23 passes for 227 yards and three touchdowns, while rushing 28 times for 120 yards and two more scores in a 36-28 Division 3 win over Linden. He has had a hand in 18 touchdowns in three playoff games.

Caledonia running back Carson VanderHoff had 46 carries for 240 yards with two touchdowns in a 43-35 loss to Mona Shores, scoring on runs of 1 and 44 yards.

Oakridge beat Howard City Tri-County 50-12, and Corey Vanderputte was a big reason why. The junior ran 17 times for 211 yards and four touchdowns (50, 2, 6, 75). On defense, he notched seven tackles, including one sack and three tackles for loss.

Jackson Lumen Christi junior running back Nicholas Wilson rushed for 206 yards and two touchdowns in a 22-6 victory versus St. Mary Catholic Central.
