Rewinding Football High Live from the 1st Friday of the 2020 football season - AL.com

The 2020 high school football season opened Thursday night with 24 games around the state.

More than 100 additional games are scheduled for tonight statewide.

8:23 PM, Caleb finding his groove: Caleb Nix has thrown 2 TD passes and run for another. Jackson Meeks had 3 TD catches. Central back in front of Hoover 28-21 with 1:02 left in the first half in a good one. You wouldn’t know this game was just scheduled on Tuesday. Meeks has 9 catches for 175 yards and 3 TDs. Hoover sophomore RJ Hamilton had five receptions for 139 yards and 3 TDs.

7:03 PM, New year, new teams: A pair of Baldwin County teams are playing their first official varsity games tonight. Orange Beach is hosting J.F. Shields and Elberta is traveling to Gulf Shores.

6:54 PM, Rocking the Rocket City: Key games in Huntsville include Austin at Hartselle, Buckhorn at Madison County, Hazel Green at Mae Jemison and Lee-Huntsville at Columbia.

6:51 PM, In Birmingham: In addition to Hoover traveling to Phenix City, other key games in the Birmingham area tonight are Pinson Valley and A-List No. 1 Ga’Quincy McKinstry hosting talent-rich Hewitt-Trussville, Gardendale hosting Sparkman, Clay-Chalkville at Shades Valley and Chelsea at Oak Mountain. One of the marquee matchups of the week comes Saturday night when defending 7A champ Thompson hosts reiging 6A champ Oxford.

6:42 PM, Only in the COVID era: Hoover had its second opening week game canceled on Monday when the Dothan football team had to be quarantined. However, the next day, the Bucs picked up another game at Central-Phenix City tonight. It’s the second year in a row those teams have opened against each other.

6:38 PM, On the Coast: Keeping an eye on several key games in the Mobile area tonight. UMS-Wright puts its state-best 33-game win streak on the line against Baker; McAdory visits St. Paul’s; Theodore travels to Saraland and Lee-Montgomery is at Daphne.
