TRENTON — For Mi’Chale Wingfield, Andrew Booker and the rest of the Winton Woods senior class, the 2020 season is a blessing.
After a summer of uncertainty, it was unknown if they’d ever get to suit up together again. Now that they can, it’s time to hunt the one goal they believe they can achieve this season:
A championship.
Winton Woods took its first step toward the OSHAA playoffs and a possible Division II title Friday night with a 34-0 beatdown of Edgewood.
But just the sheer fact that Winton Woods (1-0) and Edgewood (0-1) played at all on Friday was a win for both teams.

As of 2 p.m. Thursday, both schools' previously scheduled season openers against Kings and Fenwick, respectively, were canceled. Winton Woods AD David Lumpkin wouldn’t give up on his players, though. He made multiple calls to schools before Edgewood AD Greg Brown came through looking for an opponent for his Cougars.
“They started not knowing if they were going to have a season,” Lumpkin said. “But that’s just what this is about. The kids wanna play.”
And boy did Winton Woods play.
The shortened offseason and first game jitters bothered the Warriors offense early, but Winton Woods’ defense looked as sharp as ever. On Edgewood’s second drive, a botched snap ended up in the hands of Booker, who then returned it 62-yards for the score.
“I’m proud that I can say that I scored the first touchdown of the season for my teammates,” Booker said. “That’s a heck of an achievement.”
Winton Woods would again recover a Cougar fumble, but Warriors were unable to capitalize. Head coach Andre Parker knew that it could take the team a little while to find its footing.
“You know it’s the first game of the season, no scrimmages, no 7-on-7, so I told the coaches we got to be patient,” Parker said.
Wingfield and the rest of the Warriors offense would soon reward coach Parker for his understanding.
Midway through the second quarter, Warriors running back Emoni Steele put six on the board courtesy of a 13-yard scamper.
It was a long time coming for the Warriors to get their first offensive touchdown of 2020. They wouldn’t have to wait long for the next three.
One minute later, Tyrek Spikes got his on a 25-yard run. Three minutes later Wingfield tossed his first of the season into the awaiting arms of Antonio Turner Jr.
With 5:36 left till halftime, it was a tight one-possession game. By halftime, Winton Woods had enabled the 30-point running clock mercy rule.
But even Wingfield had to give props to his defense.
“That’s exactly what I want the scoreboard to look like all season,” Wingfield said shortly before the 34-0 score was erased from the Kumler Field scoreboard.
As of right now, the Winton Woods Warriors are right where they want to be. Back on the field and sitting at 1-0. Next week they’ll try to take another step toward that elusive title when they play Lebanon.
