Lawrence North 62, Avon 34

Donaven McCulley passed for five touchdown passes and ran for another as Lawrence North started the season with a rousing 62-34 win over Class 6A fourth-ranked Avon on Friday night.

McCulley, an Indiana recruit, ran for an 18-yard touchdown on the Wildcats’ first series, then hit junior star Omar Cooper for touchdown passes of 62 and 64 yards later in the first quarter to stake Lawrence North to a 21-7 lead.

The Wildcats kept their foot on the pedal in a second quarter that featured a combined 47 points between the two teams and one stretch where four touchdowns were scored in a seven-play span. Lawrence North took advantage of an Avon fumble late in the first half to stretch an eight-point led to a 48-27 halftime lead on a 24-yard touchdown pass from McCulley to James Williams.

McCulley finished with 8-for-13 passing for 248 yards and rushed for 157 yards on 13 carries.

Henry Hesson passed for five touchdowns for Avon, including four to Wallace Stovall. The Orioles were hurt by three turnovers. — Kyle Neddenriep

Brownsburg 38, Ben Davis 7

On a night Ben Davis was going for the 500th victory in its storied football history, the Giants had to endure the mercy rule. Because they trailed Ben Davis by more than 35 points in the third quarter, there was a running clock for the rest of the game.

Quarterback Ben Easters was 14-of-19 passing for 136 yards and a touchdown, and No. 3 Brownsburg rolled to a 38-7 victory over the No. 5 Giants in a Class 6A nonconference game.

The Bulldogs led 31-0 when Spencer Porath kicked a 46-yard field goal as the first-half clock expired. Brownsburg’s defense allowed only 41 yards of total offense by Ben Davis in the first half.

Brownsburg, which ran three offensive plays in the fourth quarter, led 38-0 through three. Ben Davis prevented a shutout when quarterback J’Uan Swanson passed to Dillon Moore for a 7-yard touchdown with 2:06 left.

Junior running back Caleb Marcus carried 11 times for 92 yards and scored Brownsburg’s fifth touchdown on a 15-yard run. Brownsburg’s defense featured two interceptions by cornerback Chris Williamson. — David Woods
