The final weeks of July ended with great optimism across college football as several Power 5 conferences announced their plans for revised scheduling, and best of all, a plan to go through with the upcoming season, one with unprecedented challenges. Less than 24 hours after the ACC revealed its 10-game, plus one slate, the SEC followed the Big Ten and Pac-12's plan to play a shortened conference-only schedule beginning in September with built-in additional open weeks in case needed.
College football's staggered open to the season begins on Aug. 29 and goes through Sept. 26, which is when the SEC expects to begin play.
"This new plan for a football schedule is consistent with the educational goals of our universities to allow for the safe and orderly return to campus of their student populations and to provide a healthy learning environment during these unique circumstances presented by the COVID-19 virus," SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said in the statement. "This new schedule supports the safety measures that are being taken by each of our institutions to ensure the health of our campus communities."
Now that there's a plan in place and football will thankfully happen this fall, preseason polls and Top 25 rankings are making their out, previewing a best-guess at the nation's top teams entering training camp.
