Top-10 college football programs vying for the title of RBU - 247Sports

Every year as the college football season transitions through the offseason and into draft speculation, it seems the fans, coaches, and even former players begin debating which program currently presides over positional superiority. Beyond bragging rights, being recognized as a pipeline to the pros may provide teams an edge on the recruiting trail and ensure rosters remain stocked with talent.

Following the trail back to the source, NFL.com uncovered the college football programs producing the most pro-ready players by position group through the Pipelines to the Pros series. The most recent installment examines the schools vying for the title of Running Back U.

Using NFL.com's Pipeline to the Pros formula, players were awarded various point values based on how early they were selected in the draft and how successful they were within the first five-years of their pro careers. An increased emphasis was placed on rookie performance, believed to be more indicative of a school’s ability to prepare student-athletes for immediate pro success.

Draft position scoring is broken down into four categories; Top-10 draft picks are considered elite prospects and awarded 10-points, Round 1 picks No. 11-32 are given 8-points, Day 2 picks from Rounds 2-3 are allotted 4-points, and Day 3 picks from Rounds 4-7 receive 2-points.

Rookie season scoring also has four categories; Rookie of the Year honors are awarded 10-points, All-Pro selections are worth 6-points, Pro Bowl selections are given 4-points, and regular-season starts receive 1-point for every start.

Veteran scoring for career years 2-5 is divided into six different categories; League MVP honors receive 5 points per award, Offensive Player of the Year honors receive 4 points per award, Defensive Player of the Year is given 4 points per award, All-Pro selections are awarded 3 points per appearance, Pro Bowl selections are given 2 points per appearance, and regular-season starts count for 0.5 points for every start.

If a player had won multiple awards in a given year, they received only the points towards their highest accolade. For example, a rookie who won Rookie of the Year, was named an All-Pro and Pro-Bowl selection with 16 starts recorded on the season would earn a total of 26 points (10 points from awards and 16 points for regular-season starts).

The weight of highly-decorated, long-tenured veterans was intentionally tempered by limiting the number of points accrued to the player’s first five seasons in the league as to better gauge the influence college football programs had in developing pro-readiness.

The results of the NFL Network’s analysis revealed which programs have best-prepared players for the pro-ranks over the past 20 years, accounting for every player drafted in that span. Considering the data at play, it becomes evident which schools have been trending upward and by contrast which ones are fading.

With that in mind, here are the top-10 college football programs currently contending for the title of Running Back U. Scroll below to see the results, including the players considered the most pro-ready from each team.
