Bradley Sylve hoping for another football opportunity - AL.com

Since Bradley Sylve played his final game at Alabama – in the Crimson Tide’s 45-40 victory over Clemson in the CFP national championship game on Jan. 11, 2016 – the cornerback has torn his left Achilles tendon, been released three times by NFL teams and played in two leagues that didn’t make to the end of their seasons.

Back home in Port Sulphur, Louisiana, Sylve hasn’t given up on football, though.

“I just want to play football and live out my dream,” Sylve told Jere Longman for the New York Times. “All I need is one team to tell me yes.”

Sylve played at Alabama from 2012 through 2015 and was a member of two national-championship teams. Although primarily a reserve for the Crimson Tide, he still figured to draw NFL attention because of his speed.

But Sylve suffered a torn left Achilles tendon on March 7, 2016 -- one day before he was to participate in Alabama's annual pro day.

After a year of rehab and recovery, Sylve signed with the Buffalo Bills on April 7, 2017, and spent the offseason program, training camp and the preseason with the NFL team. The Bills released Sylve when they reduced their preseason roster to the regular-season limit of 53 players for the 2017 campaign.

Sylve joined the New Orleans Saints' practice squad on Sept. 20, 2017, and he stayed with the team until Oct. 10, 2017. The Saints signed Sylve to a reserve/futures contract for 2018, but New Orleans released the cornerback after the 2018 NFL Draft.

In 2019, Sylve played for the Birmingham Iron until the Alliance of American Football folded eight games into its inaugural spring season.

This year, Sylve scored the first defensive touchdown in the history of the revived XFL. Playing for the DC Defenders on Feb. 8, Sylve intercepted a pass by former Gulf Shores High School and Troy standout Brandon Silvers and returned it 69 yards for a touchdown in a 31-19 victory over the Seattle Dragons.

Six days later, the Defenders traded Sylve to the Los Angeles Wildcats for linebacker Anthony Johnson.

After missing a game in the coast-to-coast transition, Sylve was with the Wildcats for three games before the XFL suspended its season because of the coronavirus pandemic. The spring league has since folded.

For players such as Sylve, opportunities in the NFL might be hard to come by 24 days before training camps are scheduled to open, and the Canadian Football League still hasn’t announced a plan to start its season, which normally would be in its fourth week.

Reports indicate the NFL and the NFL Players Association are considering a reduction in the size of offseason rosters from 90 players per team to 80 or 75 because of the coronavirus pandemic. That follows reports that the NFL plans to cut the preseason schedule from four games to two games. An NFLPA vote this week showed the players don’t want to play any preseason games after being limited to online work during the offseason programs.

Sylve lost his Plaquemines Parish home to Hurricane Katrina in 2005, an event that infuses his perspective about his football setbacks.

“After Katrina, it’s been a lot easier to overcome adversity,” Sylve said. “Nothing’s worse than what we’ve been through.”
