
According to sources with whom the Ole Miss Spirit spoke with on Thursday morning, all scheduled football related activities remain on go as of 8:45 a.m. in the wake of ongoing concerns across the country over the spreading of the Coronavirus.
These sources, however, cautioned that the situation could change quickly, with one calling it a "very fluid situation" as of now.
The Ole Miss football team, as of right now, is expected to return to campus Sunday evening for a team meeting and to begin classes Monday with spring football scheduled to start on Tuesday afternoon. The Rebels are also positioned to host recruits inside the Manning Center over the weekend.
"But that could change," warned one senior source with deep knowledge of the ongoing workings of the Ole Miss administration on Thursday morning.
The Rebels' annual Grove Bowl spring game remains on the calendar at this writing, as well, though the SEC has banned fan attendance at all sporting events until at March 30.
Students have been off campus this week for their annual spring break. As of this writing (Thursday morning), Ole Miss officials had not yet canceled classes. which are currently set to resume campus wide on Monday.
There will be no fans allowed, per the SEC ruling, at this weekend's highly-anticipated SEC West baseball showdown between Ole Miss and LSU to be played in Oxford.
Ole Miss, at this hour, has not issued any official statement regarding football-related activities. If and when that happens, we will publish that statement or statements here on the Ole Miss Spirit.
On Wednesday, Baylor, the Rebels' opening football opponent for the 2020 season, suspended the start of its spring practices and releasing the following statement:
"Baylor Football is taking every precaution to ensure the safety and well-being of our student athletes and the Baylor community. As such, the team will suspend the start of spring practice until at least March 23. The situation will continue to be monitored and any further changes to the schedule deemed necessary will be made as more information becomes available. Additionally, no potential student-athletes will be permitted to make official or unofficial visits to campus until at least March 23, and that status will continue to be evaluated. We are thankful for the leadership of President Livingstone and Mack Rhoades on this matter."
Also on Wednesday, both Ohio State and Michigan canceled recruiting-related activities. The Ivy League canceled all spring sports and practice-related activities.
Ohio State head coach released this statement via Twitter: "We will suspend all official and unofficial visits to our campus through April 20, while we continue to monitor and adjust to today’s changing issues. In addition, our coaches will not recruit off campus this spring while we follow the university’s new temporary travel guidelines."
