“It certainly was not the reason that we wanted to hire him, but there’s no doubt with our recruits and current players, all these guys grew up watching him play. I think it will be a great benefit for us.”
This is new territory for OU. It’s been almost 70 years since the Sooners hired a coach quick off an NFL career.
In 1947, Bud Wilkinson hired Frank “Pop” Ivy, who had just completed a six-year pro career in which he caught 53 passes in 57 games. Ivy, a Sooner all-American in 1939, spent six years as an OU assistant. He was in it for the long haul. Ivy went on to become head coach of the CFL’s Edmonton Eskimos, the NFL’s Cardinals and the AFL’s Houston Oilers. Ivy finally retired from football in 1984, as a scout with the New York Giants.
If Murray shows the commitment of Pop Ivy, a fruitful coaching career should blossom.
“I don't have to do this job,” Murray said. “I don't need it, but I do it because I love the game, I love the opportunity to go back and help them (players) pursue their goals on and off the field.”
Murray admitted that coaching is more difficult than he imagined, “but it’s fun and it's a challenge, but that is what I'm used to. My whole life, it's always been a competitive atmosphere in everything that I've done. This is where you want to be.”
Like I said, Murray could be the total package. He even could well-counsel his tailbacks on when to leave for the NFL Draft. Murray, remarkably, spent five years as a student-athlete. Redshirted as a freshman, then played four seasons, 2007-10, rushing for 3,685 yards. That’s an archaic concept now and it was getting that way nine years ago.
But it all turned out great for the man with the lyrical name. One of the all-time OU greats. A fantastic NFL career. Now a chance to coach at his alma mater, which should go famously so long as Murray is hungry to coach.
