Gamecocks suspend spring football practice - 247Sports.com

Football is the latest South Carolina sport to have its schedule affected by the Coronavirus. While the Southeastern Conference suspended all competitions and championships through March 30 earlier on Thursday, it left the decision up to the schools on how to handle spring football practices.

Shortly before 4 p.m. on Thursday, the Gamecocks and head coach Will Muschamp decided to suspend football activities.

“Due to the extension of spring break on the University of South Carolina campus, there will be no spring football practices held during the week of March 15-21,” the school released in a statement. “Updates to the spring practice schedule will be announced as they come available.”

The University has shut down from March 16-22, which is the week following spring break. Classes are scheduled to resume, but only in an on-line capacity, beginning March 23.

So with that in mind, practices have been postponed for the same duration. The Gamecocks were scheduled to practice four times during that week - Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday - with the team’s first scrimmage of the spring being held on Saturday, March 21.

No official word has been announced with regard to South Carolina’s Pro Day, which is scheduled for Thursday, March 19. It seems unlikely that event will go on as planned, though, as NFL teams are pulling their scouts off the road and have said staff will not attend various schools’ pro day events.

South Carolina is currently scheduled to return to the football practice field on Tuesday, March 24 but team meetings are scheduled for Monday, March 23.

The NCAA allows teams to have 15 practices in the spring, and teams are allowed to practice after their scheduled spring game, if they like.

The Gamecocks currently have their Garnet & Black Spring Game set for April 4, which will be held at 1 p.m. and broadcast on SEC Network +.
