HANOVER, N.H.—Using a suffocating defense, efficient rushing attack and timely offensive drives, Columbia Football registered its first shutout in 112 games with a dominant 19-0 victory at No. 25 Dartmouth Friday night at Memorial Stadium. The game was played in front of a nationally-televised ESPNU audience.
With the win, Columbia improves to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the Ivy League, while Dartmouth drops to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the league. The shutout was Columbia's first on the road and first Ivy League shutout since a 38-0 win at Princeton on Oct. 3, 2009. It was also Columbia's first win against a nationally ranked team since Nov. 8, 2003 when it defeated Harvard 16-13. Additionally, Columbia shut out Dartmouth for the first time since Nov. 25, 1944 (21-0).
With a dominating first half, Columbia built a 13-0 halftime lead with two Alex Felkins field goals and a Gabriel Hollingsworth touchdown run. The Lions added a third quarter touchdown pass from Joe Green to Mike Roussos to go up 19-0 and seal the victory. On offense, the Lions rushed for 141 yards, totaled 239 offensive yards, won the time of possession battle (31:50), and did not turn the ball over. Green threw for 98 yards on 14 of 25 completions, running backs Dante Miller and Ryan Young combined for 115 yards rushing. The Lions also converted two key fourth downs which led to scoring plays.
Columbia's defense limited Dartmouth to season-lows for points (zero), total offense (262 yards), rushing yards (60), and first downs (13), and held Dartmouth to just 4-16 conversions on third downs. The Big Green came into the game averaging 32.4 points per game, 406.0 yards of total offense per game, 200.6 rushing yards per game and 21.6 total first downs per game. The Big Green had also converted 53 percent of their third downs (33-62).
"We knew coming in, we had to be really sound in all areas," Columbia's Patricia and Shepard Alexander Head Coach of Football Al Bagnoli said. "We had to protect the ball, we had to be sound in the kicking game. And in all three facets we were terrific. We were sound, we made every scoring opportunity in the kick game, we didn't turn the ball over on offense, we won the turnover battle, and we stopped all of their explosive plays on defense. It was a tremendous team win. Congrats to everybody—players and coaches."
Every once in awhile you have a chance at a signature win. You don't get many of those opportunities during the course of the year. This was a big opportunity for us and our players took full advantage of it."
After taking the lead with 1:08 left in the first quarter, Columbia led the entire game and never looked back. Columbia went up 3-0 in the first quarter when Alex Felkins converted a 34-yard field goal following a time-draining, 14-play, 52-yard drive. Key plays in the drive were three Green completions to Dante Miller (15-yards) and two to Jack Ertz (10 and nine yards).
The Lions' running game got rolling in the second quarter with an 11-play, 67-yard drive spanning 4:50 which ended in a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback Gabriel Hollingsworth. Ryan Young started the drive with back-to-back runs of 19 and 16 yards which put the Lions into Dartmouth territory. A third down seven-yard pass to Mike Roussos gave the Lions a fourth-and-1 at the 12-yard line. On the next play, Gabriel Hollingsworth ran the ball up the middle, but an offsides call on Dartmouth gave the Lions a first down and goal at the seven-yard line. Green then hit wide receiver Mike Roussos for a screen down to the 1-yard line, then Hollingsworth came in and dragged a Dartmouth defender into the end zone for a 1-yard touchdown run.
Columbia got its first turnover of the game when Ben Mathiasmeier intercepted a tipped Kyler pass and returned it 11 yards to the Dartmouth 30-yard line. The play set up a 41-yard field goal by Felkins to give the Lions a commanding 13-0 lead with 7:26 before halftime.
But Dartmouth was not finished as the Big Green mounted its first major threat to score before the half. After a 42-yard punt by Columbia's Drew Schmid was downed at the 1-yard line, Dartmouth drove 66 yards down the field using several Kyler passes to advance to the Columbia 33-yard line. The drive was stopped on a fourth-down-and two play in which Columbia's Paul Akere tackled Paxton Scott for no gain and turnover on downs with 55 seconds in the half.
In taking its 13-0 halftime advantage, Columbia outgained Dartmouth 144-85 in total yardage, finished with 10 first downs to Dartmouth's four, and held the Big Green to 2-8 on third downs and only 3.0 offensive yards per play. The Lions became the first team this season to hold Dartmouth scoreless in consecutive quarters.
At halftime, Bagnoli said he told the team to play the second half like the score was tied 0-0.
"Honestly, we left some points on the board in the first half," Bagnoli said. "We didn't want that to come back and bite us in the tail. Bagnoli said. "It was just 'play it like it was 0-0.' They had the ball on the first drive and if they came out and made a statement drive, it was going to get interesting. Luckily, our defense held and forced them to punt. We flipped field position and we were the first team to score. It was huge. There was still 30 minutes against a high-scoring, very explosive team. It was certainly not over at that point."
Columbia increased its lead to 19-0 when Green connected with Mike Roussos for a 25-yard touchdown pass with 8:31 left in the third quarter. Green lofted a pass over the Dartmouth cornerback and Roussos caught the ball while tumbling into the end zone. The Lions went for a two-point conversion but the pass fell incomplete. Columbia converted on a key fourth-and-1 play from the Dartmouth 47-yard line when Green completed a 4-yard pass to Marcus Libman to keep the drive alive. An 11-yard Green scramble on a third-down-and-nine play gave Columbia possession at the Dartmouth 25-yard line. Green found Roussos in the end zone on the ensuing play following a 10-play, 60-yard drive spanning 3:50.
With time running out, Columbia secured the shutout by stopping Dartmouth on two late scoring opportunities. The Big Green drove 35 yards before facing a fourth and goal from the Columbia 5-yard line where a pass fell incomplete with 6:34 to play. Another 55-yard drive ended with 2:29 to go as the Big Green faced another fourth-and-goal after Jordan Colbert stopped Dartmouth's Isaac Boston at the two-yard line. On the final play, the pass was broken up by Columbia defensive lineman Mitchell Shiskie.
Kyler was held to 194 passing yards and an interception while completing 24 of 45 passes. Scott caught seven passes for 78 yards, and Jalen Mackie led Dartmouth's defense with 13 tackles (seven solo).
Miller, the Ivy League's leading rusher heading into the game, led the Lions with 85 all-purpose yards, while Roussos finished with 82 all-purpose yards. Akere led the Lions' defense with six tackles.
Columbia gets back into Ivy League play next week when it travels to Yale for a Noon contest at the Yale Bowl.
