SAN JOSE — Six seconds.

That’s all the time Hassan Mahasin needed to race into the end zone from his opponent’s 22-yard line, jump, spin and raise his hands just in time to pull down the first touchdown pass of Serra’s 33-26 win over Valley Christian on Friday night. Two possessions later, it didn’t take the speedy Serra junior much more time than that to dash past defenders on a 60-yard run for a second score.

The Padres started fast, but coach Patrick Walsh knew he was in for a battle against the same foe they faced in the CCS Division I championship game a year ago.

“Those fast starts, they always equal misery, in my opinion,” Walsh said following the win. “It’s like oh, opening kickoff, we’re gonna roll. It never happens that way.”

Serra would eventually widen its lead as far as 16 points in the second half, but Valley Christian provided a scare at the end.

Serra’s sideline was buzzing after running back Petelo Richards powered through a wide-open hole and into the end zone to put the Padres ahead 33-18 with only 1:35 to play.

On the first play of Valley Christian’s next possession, quarterback Jackson Berman heaved a pass downfield and found receiver Jurrion Dickey, who had gotten behind the Padres’ secondary and coasted into the end zone. Valley Christian converted the two-point attempt, making it a seven-point game. It was a 10-second strike — a dose of Serra’s first-half formula.

Valley Christian’s onside kick attempt took a fortunate bounce, giving the Warriors a final shot to knot it up with just over a minute to play.

Berman scrambled again outside the pocket and took off beyond the line of scrimmage. Valley’s quarterback was also its leading rusher with 81 yards on 14 carries to accompany 165 yards through the air on 9-of-17 passing.

His final attempt of the night, however, proved futile.

Fynn Williams knocked the ball out of his grasp and Sioeli Helu recovered with 47 seconds left. At last, Serra could take a knee and breath easy.

“It was a great way to come off of a 12-month absence,” Walsh said. “Coach (Mike) Machado and I, we’ve played each other so many times, and it just always seems to be this way.”

The Padres totaled 252 yards rushing, including 84 on five carries for Mahasin, whose explosiveness Walsh compared to the Kansas City Chiefs’ Tyreek Hill. Richards led all rushers with 86 yards on the ground, and quarterback Dominique Lampkin also added 76 yards.

Lampkin connected on three touchdown passes, with one apiece to Mahasin, Joseph Villaroman and Louisville-bound tight end Christian Pederson, who was held to only two other receptions on the night.

Dickey, who is only a sophomore at Valley Christian, led all receivers with 105 yards on five receptions. He’s already garnered offers from four Pac-12 schools and is rated four stars by 24/7 Sports. Walsh praised him as one of the best receivers in California.
