Ohio State football and the recruiting battle for 4-star running back Nicholas Singleton - cleveland.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State is one of the many college football programs to find success on the Pennsylvania recruiting trail.

The Buckeyes used their 2021 recruiting class to find one of the three players battling to be its next starting quarterback in Kyle McCord, along with McCord’s teammate, wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. OSU will look to continue that success in 2022 class with Nicholas Singleton.

WHO: 4-star running back who plays for Governor Mifflin High School in Reading, Pennsylvania.

SIZE: 6-foot-0, 210 pounds.

RANKING: The No. 5 running back in the class of 2022, the No. 98 player.

THE BATTLE: Singleton trimmed his list to nine at the beginning of the month, including the Buckeyes with Alabama, Auburn, Michigan, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Penn State, Texas A&M and Wisconsin.

THE HOMESTATE FACTOR: In 2021, Pennsylvania had five players inside the top 100 and 12 who were four-star recruits. The only one who chose Penn State was wide receiver Lonnie White Jr.; the rest left for OSU, Clemson, Florida, LSU, Ole Miss, Pittsburgh, Texas A&M and Wisconsin.

The inability to lock down its backyard didn’t go unnoticed by James Franklin and his coaching staff. They already have eight 2022 commits and are currently the No. 6 class nationally. They already have three commits from in-state players, momentum with two more and the only top 200 player to go elsewhere was linebacker Anthony Johnson to Rutgers.

THE GEOGRAPHY: Curry’s hometown is 187 miles from Ohio State’s campus, a three-hour drive.

THE OTHER CONTENDERS: Ohio State is probably the favorite, but plenty of other national programs have made a strong push. Brian Dohn — a national recruiting analyst for 247Sports — likes his speed.

“Good frame with ability to play at 210 pounds. Highly productive player with 32 touchdowns and 9.4 yards per carry as sophomore. Has burst to get through hole and speed to finish runs. Gets the edge with ease at high school level. Runs away from secondary. Shows vision and cut-back ability when running between tackles. Sticks foot in ground and decisive as one-cut runner. Does not waste movement. Not challenged to be a physical runner very often. Has to show ability to move laterally and be elusive in tight spaces. Improvement as pass catcher would accentuate game. Multi-year starter at Top 10 program. Day 3 NFL draft potential.”

THE OSU NEED: Ohio State brought in the 2021 class’ top running back TreVeyon Henderson and top-100 all-purpose back Evan Pryor. It doesn’t have to swing big at the position in 2022, but still needs a running back. Singleton is one of a few names on its list of possible additions.

WHAT THIS GUY DOES: Singleton is coming off of a junior season where he ran for 1,311 yards and 22 touchdowns on 107 carries. His skills match some responsibilities he would likely have in Columbus, his ability to get to the edge and cut up field.

WILL THE BUCKEYES GET HIM?

Singleton has told cleveland.com that his recruitment is a “neck and neck” battle between Ohio State and Penn State. He’s had one crystal ball favoring the Nittany Lions, but that was made in October 2019.

Ohio State is in a good spot with the four-star recruit and may hold a small lead heading into the spring.

“When you talk to them, it’s just real,” Singleton told cleveland.com. “They’ve got real good coaches. Obviously, the team is real good. When I went down there for the camp, it was real nice. It stands out a lot.”
