FREEZE UP: Southeast Minnesota football team returns after yearlong absence - KTTC

KASSON, Minn. (KTTC) -- The COVID-19 pandemic upended the world and altered a lot of sports.

Yet with restrictions lifting, the Med City Freeze are getting back on the field and preparing for a 2021 season.

"All of us love football. It's a way to get away from reality and play again," said Freeze starting quarterback Demonte Nelson.

With a long background in football, he's glad to be back playing in the Southern Plains Football League.

"Three year starter in high school. Two year starter in college, then I got hurt," Nelson said. "It's definitely changed my life a lot."

Co-founder Tim Nela has the most rushing touchdowns and yards in a season during the team's 5 season existence.

"We want to be able to give people an opportunity to play football again. We got a lot of people from around town and surrounding areas," Nela said. "We got an opportunity to give back to the community in a way of entertainment."

After last year's season didn't happen because of the pandemic, the Med City Freeze is even more motivated now they are back on the gridiron.

"Our season will officially start with our first game in April. We go until mid July," Nela said. "If everything works out, we'll play in the championship game in August."

While it may be an amateur team, there's plenty of hard hitting football with most players in their mid to late 20s.

"When I first heard about it, I thought since I'd never played it before, 9-man was going to be super easy," Nelson said. "There's a lot of guys that take this to heart and go hard every single down. It's get really competitive in this league."

The Freeze invites everyone out to the first game against the Buffalo Ridge Wildcats.

"It's just a good time," Nela said. "Come out and see some people that you know, enjoy yourself on a Saturday night and freeze up!"

The first game of the season will be on April 24th at Mayo High School's football field with kickoff at 5. Find out more about the team at their website and Facebook page.
