How many college football programs are capable of getting to the College Football Playoff next season and potentially dethroning the University of Alabama at the top? According to oddsmakers, there are nine well-equipped teams at +3500 or better that could make noise in November as possible national title threats.
Are you buying just under a dozen contenders, a group that includes six programs that have never appeared in the final four?
Alabama put the finishing touches on a spectacular campaign a month ago in Miami, running away from Ohio State early during a 52-24 whooping of the Buckeyes to capture its sixth national championship in the past 12 seasons under coach Nick Saban. It was Saban's record-setting seventh crown, surpassing Paul 'Bear' Bryant for most all-time among head coaches.
And with zero expected drop-off despite a potential record number of first-round selections later this year in the NFL Draft, the Crimson Tide should be back in the thick of things riding the nation's longest-winning streak into fall a camp a few months from now.
Judging by what we've seen in recent years, it takes a litany of NFL-level prospects, elite coaching and near perfect quarterback play to win it all in college football and the teams with the most talent rosters from top to bottom are there at the end.
