The College Football Playoff seemingly has become a showcase limited to the truly elite programs across the nation. Before a season even kicks off, everyone just assumes that teams like Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, Georgia and Notre Dame are sure bets to reach the sport’s ultimate destination.
A total of 11 schools have accounted for the 28 playoff spots that have been filled in seven seasons of the format. Frequently, the playoff has been scrutinized for the omission of non-marquee programs that have been in the conversation — such teams sometimes even checking in undefeated come selection day.
The lack of parity has not gone unnoticed, even by some of the most powerful men in college football.
“I don’t think sport is hurt when there are really strong programs," Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick said recently. "You want the Celtics and the Lakers good in professional basketball, you like the Dodgers and Yankees good in baseball. So I think when the Alabamas, the Georgias, the Notre Dames, the USC’s, whoever they are, get in periods where they are really good, I think that’s great for college athletics.
"What we can’t have is the sense that the other schools can’t make it in. And we’ve gotta make sure that the opportunity’s real and schools feel like they can get there. So eventually an expanded playoff will hopefully create that greater opportunity.”
ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit said as much last December.
“Our postseason is as bad as there is,” Herbstreit said. “And we have got to figure out a system that opens up opportunities. The season ends Jan. 12, I can already tell you 2021 Ohio State’s coming out of the Big Ten, Clemson’s coming out of the ACC, Alabama’s coming out of the SEC. I can say in 2023, Ohio State is coming out of the Big Ten, Clemson’s coming out of the ACC and Alabama (in the SEC). … If that’s where we are is that right, is that healthy for the sport when 98 or 99 percent of the participants realize they don’t have a chance before the season starts? We’ve got to look at this 2020 year and realize that we have to tweak the system for the betterment of the sport. We’re at a fork in the road right now on a lot of levels and we’ve got to look at some potential changes.”
But that doesn’t mean teams that haven’t historically found themselves in the playoff cannot get the job done. Below is a list of 10 teams that could potentially make some noise in 2021. If not a run to the playoff, they may at least challenge the sport’s major national players this fall.
