Past performance does not guarantee future results. That’s great news for run-of-the-mill fantasy football teams as they enter this pivotal week, which is likely either your regular season finale or your playoff opener.
We’re well past the point where fantasy mavens can automatically start their Week 1 lineup and expect to advance. Week 14 success has less to do with who you play than it does who THEY play. Matchups are the key.
This week, we’ll look at some players who could be surprising successes over the next three weeks. We’ll examine stars who have unfortunately-timed matchups next week.
Mitchell Trubisky (Bears QB) — Nick Foles’ former understudy has been playing better lately despite the Bears’ struggles, and the next three weeks he’s facing the Texans, Vikings and Jaguars, three of the NFL’s more underwhelming defenses.
David Montgomery (Bears RB) — What’s good for Trubisky will be good for his top running back, who has totaled 253 yards and three touchdowns over the past two weeks.
Jared Goff (Rams QB) — The inconsistent L.A. signal caller should be mostly on the next three weeks against the Patriots, Jets and Seahawks.
Robert Woods (Rams WR) — While Goff is throwing the ball around the next three weeks, Woods and Cooper Kupp will be competing to be the biggest beneficiary.
Ronald Jones (Buccaneers RB) — Jones has gotten the lion’s share of the work in his timeshare with Leonard Fournette, and he faces the Vikings, Falcons and Lions during the fantasy playoffs. How delightful!
Jonathan Taylor (Colts RB) — The Indy rookie is rounding into form, rushing for at least 90 yards each of the past two weeks. The former Badgers star could pad his stats against the Raiders, Texans and no-longer-invincible Steelers.
Jarvis Landry (Browns WR) — Odell Beckham’s injury has elevated his LSU teammate in the Cleveland pecking order. Over the past two weeks: 16 catches for 205 yards and two TDs. And his next three foes are the Ravens and the Jersey Boys, the Giants and winless Jets.
Tyler Boyd (Bengals WR) — Cincinnati has quarterback issues, but their No. 1 receiver will still be findable running through the Dallas defense this week and Houston’s in Week 16.
SITTING STARS
Las Vegas’ Josh Jacobs might not be healthy enough to play, but neither he nor backup Devontae Booker is a particularly good option against the Colts. … New England QB Cam Newton will be so tired from running away from Aaron Donald that he might not run for his usual touchdown against the Rams … No Steelers running back can be trusted against Buffalo when they could amass only 21 yards on Monday against Washington. … Speaking of the WFT, it will probably keep 49ers RB Raheem Mostert under wraps. … And don’t even think about taking a chance on the first career start of Philly QB Jalen Hurts in New Orleans.
MATCHUP GAME
Dallas RB Ezekiel Elliott has had few people blocking for him this season. Luckily for him, he doesn’t need many when facing Cincinnati. … Tampa Bay should do well coming off the bye and facing the Vikings’ defense. Look for Chris Godwin and Rob Gronkowski, in particular, to post season-best numbers. … Seattle RB Chris Carson should run wild against the Jets, now that they have gotten flirting with victory out of their system. … Jacksonville’s defense will offer little resistance against Tennessee. That’s great news for QB Ryan Tannehill and, if he’s healthy enough, WR A.J. Brown.
INJURY WATCH
The two biggest names on the injured list this week are Christian McCaffrey and Drew Brees. Carolina’s star running back is expected back, but New Orleans’ quarterback is still iffy because of his busted ribs. Probably no need to put Taysom Hill back on the bench yet. … Carolina has two receivers on the COVID list, D.J. Moore and Curtis Samuel. … Six prominent running backs are currently questionable: the Chiefs’ Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Jacksonville’s James Robinson, Washington’s Antonio Gibson, the Rams’ Cam Akers, Detroit’s D’Andre Swift and Pittsburgh’s James Conner. Others listed as questionable include Cincinnati WR Tee Higgins, Baltimore tight end Mark Andrews and Titans TE Jonnu Smith.
THE DEEPEST SLEEPERS
If you’re scrounging for help at running back this week, there are a couple of surprising alternatives available at the New Jersey Meadowlands. The Giants’ Alfred Morris, who is so old he was born during the Reagan administration, scored both New York touchdowns in its upset victory in Seattle last week. And the Jets will likely turn again to Ty Johnson, who came in after Frank Gore suffered a concussion and rushed for 104 yards and a touchdown against Las Vegas.
