The 2020 college football season has been one of the wildest in recent memory. With a lack of spring practice, no summer team workouts, and fall camps which often didn't feature much hitting, early season results were quite up and down.
But things have started to normalize a bit in the sport. The top teams are, for the most part, the ones we all expected to be at the top. Alabama, Clemson, and Ohio State have not gone anywhere. And the bottom teams like Kansas, Vanderbilt, UTEP, Louisiana Monroe, and UMass are all still bringing up the read.
Then there are some teams who got off to somewhat disappointing starts. In this article, nine teams which have lost at least twice in the first two months of the season are highlighted because with a specific improvement or two, combined with a friendly schedule, they could potentially run the table or completely reverse their fortunes from the first two months.
Teams with zero or one loss are specifically excluded from this piece. For more on those teams, consider Chris Hummer's piece on projecting the College Football Playoff.
Going on a strong late-season run, whether the improvement of the team is real or just the byproduct of a friendly schedule, can be a big help to a team's recruiting. And National Signing Day is just seven weeks away. Consider how a team like Tennessee won five straight games to close the regular season before National Signing Day. Tennessee went from a 2-5 start to a 7-5 finish in the regular season and parlayed that work into a No. 13 recruiting class and a hot start in 2021 recruiting as well.
Late-season games aren't worth more in the standings, but they certainly hold more value in terms of public perception, recruiting, coach job security, and momentum, to whatever extent that can be qualified.
